Nobody is saying Harper isn't a very good player. He's just very overhyped. Paul Goldschmidt is every bit the offensive force Harper is but gets a fraction of the attention.

I mean the OP said Harper "never had a great hitting season" and is "no substance", so he is pretty much saying Harper is not a very good player. Now both of those comments are comically wrong, but he did say it.

For all the hype he receives, he’s not very good. He had 2 good hitting seasons but shitted the bed in the playoffs. Now he’s pedestrian at best and people think he deserves 400 mil. He’s an okay outfielder. I can name 20 outfielders better than him and 40 players better than his age demographic in the bigs

Sure, I’ll bite.

Has only reached 40 home runs once.
Has never reached 100 RBI’s.
Only stolen over 20 bases once.
Injury prone.
Goes into slumps that make your head spin.
Terrible base runner.
Statiscally he’s one of the worst right fielders in baseball when it comes to defense.

But for some reason people seem to think he’s worth $400 million. Maybe he can sign a hair product contract worth that much.

JD Martinez is blowing the league away and he didn’t get that kind of money. Harper won’t either and he can’t hold JD’s jock right now.

So has Mike Trout

RBIs are a terrible stat to judge individual performance. Albert Pujols knocked in 100 last year and was two wins below replacement level.

Only stolen over 20 bases once.

Again, not really a stat that proves someone is overrated. Babe Ruth never stole 20 bases in a season.

Injury prone.

I'll give you that. He has had his fair share of injuries.

Has positive career BsR.

This year he has been bad, but on his career has positive UZR and DRS.

Harper is a great player. He is only overrated in the fact that people were trying to argue just a couple of years ago that he was better than, or on par with, Trout.

Trout's average season is better than all but of Harper's season with the exception of his MVP year.

Today I learned that having a slump in the first half of a season negates all previous years combined.
It's a bit much but this OP holds a little water. Harper has NEVER had a 100 RBI season. Even in his great 2015 season when he had 42 homers, he finished with 99. Again, outside of 2015, he's never hit 30 homers in a season. He averages 74 walks to 107 strikeouts in his career and despite having two seasons where he finished with a .330 and .319 average, his career average is .278.

I'm not a Harper hater by any means, but it's worth noting that none of those are $500 million numbers.

For reference, Kris Bryant averages 10 more RBIs per season, a 10 point higher average, and one home run more. This on top of having a higher average OBP, SLG %, and OPS.

Harper's good, anyone who says he isn't is an idiot, but it's not like he's the God of Offensive Production worth any amount of money like some make him out to be.

RBIs should never be considered when evaluating a hitter. It’s a stat more dependent on what others have done, than the hitter himself. But, if you want to take RBIs into consideration, consider this. You referenced Kris Bryant, there is a stat called RBI%, it’s never really used, because people like counting stats. It measures the % of people on base the batter has driven in when at bat. Since the 2015 season, when Bryant was called up, he’s driven in 14.52% of ROB. Harper has driven in 15.59% ROB.

ETA: To go a little more in depth, RBI% doesn’t include any HRs the batter hit with men on or off base, and actually penalizes the batter for taking walks.

At the risk of beating a dead horse, RBIs are a terrible stat to judge value. Totally context and teammate dependant. Albert Pujols hit .241/.286/.386 last year, which is atrocious, but still knocked in 100 mostly because Mike Trout is brilliant and always on. Same for Brandon Phillips a few years. Below average hitter, but a guy who wouldn’t walk and had the fortune of hitting behind Joey Votto.
