So what does it mean that he has to “look for” another job?

so it’s essentially a nothing clause.

It’s generally a nothing clause. I don’t know what Franklin’s contract says, but BK’s says that he has to “exercise due diligence and good faith in seeking qualifying employment”. Having your agent pick up the phone and talk to people arguably satisfies that standard.

If Franklin's new job pays him less than the $8M he's owed annually through 2031, Penn State only owes him the difference.

Would be awesome if he signs a contract at his next job paying $7,999,999.99

Edit. I read this backwards. He really needs to take a job paying $1 per year

Pretty sure O had something similar in his contract but LSU still paid it. Correct me if I’m wrong.

How will this be enforced though?
If Penn State feels that he’s not making a good faith effort to find new employment, then they could file suit claiming he’s in violation of the contract and seek to have the contract voided, meaning no more buyout money owed.

If I were him, I’d sign for $4M with the understanding that he’ll have a huge budget for hiring his coordinators and assistant coaches.

He's applying at Vandalay Industries. They sell latex.

You can count the numbers of coaches who don’t have the same deal on one hand and still have fingers left.

The dumbest thing about the X post in the OP is that they’re acting as if they conducted some hard-hitting journalism.

As others have said, pretty standard, though there have been exceptions.

Do people apply for head coaching gigs and broadcasting gigs online?

Again, how do you enforce any contractual obligation?

I’m curious what would happen if someone offered him a shitty job for a lot of pay and he turned it down.

ETA: like what would happen if someone like Troy offered him $1.5 mil to be their Coordinator.

That’s pretty much in every contract.

Yeah, I guess that’s always an option.

Specific enforcement would be difficult in this situation if even available.

I’m sure it’s fully spelled out what is required of him. I doubt they expect him to take any limp dick job offer that comes his way, but I would imagine that if he willingly interviews for a G5 or P5 HC job or a high level P5 coordinator role and is offered it, but says no, they have language that covers it.

More schools need something like this if you are insistent on these high dollar buyouts.

They don’t.

Of course. What would it even mean?

Vaguely remember this but I think LSU was very good towards Coach O. Due to how he left and how highly he spoke of the university and of how the firing was handled, there was a lot of good will there.
