He has had some good years for sure, but I always remember the Mel Tucker deal at MSU after one good season
Exactly the thing that came to mind. That’s a reset of the whole coaching market type contract. The big thing for IU is that I can’t see CS making it all the way through the end of this contract just because of his age.

Indiana will live to regret Cignetti's 8 year contract extension.

Who knew IU had some deep pockets for their football program?
They have one of the largest alumni bases in the country.

It's probably coming from Mark Cuban he's an alum.

The two situations aren't remotely alike though. Mel Tucker had a losing record in every season he'd ever coached until that 1 anomaly year when they gave him the bag. And Sparty has actually tasted success before, I mean Dantonio just before him had a great run of Rose Bowls and playoffs and B1G titles and just lost steam in the end. They also had Saban in the 90s and a good run in the 50s. They arent a blueblood but they're not a historical doormat either.
Cignetti has been highly successful everywhere he's been, losing was the norm for Mel and winning is the norm for Cig. And Indiana has probably the worst football history of anyone in the P4 conferences. Why would they not do everything they can to lock up the 1 guy who has taken them to never before seen heights for what looks to be the 2nd season in a row?

I doubt it. What would be the alternative if he left, hire some random coach and go back to being a doormat? They need to stay relevant and strike while the iron is hot. If he keeps them competitive, the contract will pay for itself.

I love how he has energized that squad- but he only has one ranked win at Indiana. Almost 100 mill for that dang

Your football coach is worth more than $12 million a year if they’re winning.
Yet a roster of 105(Big Ten did adopt it) is worth only 20 accumatively and that's scoffed at. It's the coach contracts folks should have an issue with. Most end up paid off millions to go away. Players meanwhile are threatened with legal action to recover funds if they choose to leave.
