before nadal and federer there was agassi and sampras and before them there was bjorn borg and johnny mac

people forget (or never knew) that borg won 11 tennis majors in between 1974 and 1981

I contend that this era is even better than the aforementioned two.

what's your rationale for that belief?

racket technology has made the game faster but probably less athletically demanding IMO... although I like watching big serves at some level I think there's also more skill involved with wooden rackets

its not that big of a difference imo. ive played with both rackets and the sweet spot is relatively the same size. the weight is the big difference

the touch is different and the velocity is different

the new ones are "better" for the user but I think the game is more demanding and better television if it were played with wooden rackets

(1)
I do think McEnroe was a unique talent whose flame burned out a little bit too quick. Borg, though, was a guy whose fitness was outstanding but his strokes weren't all that great. I think all three of those guys expose him on any surface in a prime vs. prime matchup.

(2)
Have you read Agassi's book? He talks about playing Nadal for the first time, and says that he "couldn't even fathom" Nadal. And this is when Nadal was like 18 or 19. He also speaks of Federer as being the best player of all time. To me, this suggests that this new era ushered in a higher level of tennis than has ever been played before.

Completely unrelated to this thread, but Nadal just lost to Verdasco for the first time ever in the round of 16 at Madrid. I wonder when the last time he lost so early on clay was

And he was down a double break in the third set. WTF?

If they played with wooden rackets I think Borg would have absolutely destroyed Sampras, Agassi, and Federer... but maybe not Nadal (would have loved to see those two play)

Borg's fitness was unparalleled and his game in general is greatly under-appreciated as time has passed

I don't think it burned out - the game got better with more dynamic rackets and caught up with power - playing the angles wasn't going to cut it.

Look I loved Mac, but his game was sort of a limited one-trick pony.

Borg was a far better player.

I've seen a few of these references. Who tried to claim this and what was the context?

So do you contend that the Borg/McEnroe era was the best?

eh, I would just say that each era is different and generally speaking people who claim that today's era of sports is better are just not very aware of the great players from other eras

Verlanderbeast stated that Blake Griffin is the greatest wing on the fast break in NBA history

The 1.5 years he took off are the only years the bulls didn't win the championship. THey could have won 8 in a row. Thats nuts. I think Basketball is more competitive, because more people play.

I guess your fuzzy math left off the part where Jordan was playing in 1995 for 3 months before they were booted out of the playoffs by the Magic.

My list
Kobe
Babe Ruth
Gretzky
