It's Gretzky.

If Bolt destroys people again this year, he will be up there. He is probably the fastest person anyone alive today will ever see.

against the worst competition baseball has ever seen

Not really. Many of the all-time baseball greats played during this time like Lou Gehrig, Ty Cobb, Rogers Hornsby, George sisler, Harry heilmann, and tris speaker.

Also, during babe ruths era, baseball was the most popular sport in america BY FAR. all the best athletes played baseball.

babe ruth hit 14% of all American league homers in 1927. If that were done today, one would have to hit about 300 home runs in 1 season.

Maradona is in the same conversation as Pele, so I wouldn't mention Pele in this thread.

Pele may not even be the GOAT as far as Brazilians go.

Garrincha was (arguably) a better/more skilled player than Pele, but nobody has ever heard of him.

Pele may be the most FAMOUS soccer player of all time, but that certainly doesn't make him the greatest.

Is there such a thing as a bad post in a pretty played out and slightly meaningless subject. It was obviously a joke and one i would hope people wouldn't take seriously...however i will take the critism and work on it for future posting dukke v. sucks getting bad feedback though

I'll go with Jordan and Gretzky. If there is only one answer for the thread question, it'd have to be Gretzky based on the numbers alone.

Has anyone mentioned Shawn White yet? I know his sport is relatively new, but watching the X Games and Winter Olympics...you watch everyone else go, and then watching him go is just simply another level. Actually, several levels.

No mention of Federer at all?

I mentioned him and I was surprised he didn't get any mentions either. It's probably the horrible record against Nadal that prevents people from thinking he's the undisputed GOAT.

well that or maybe Novak Djovacik (sp?) is better

He is really good.

I still think Usain Bolt is a great answer.

if he stays healthy he looks like he will be #1 all time... and just after everyone proclaimed Federer #1 all time, just before that Sampras was everyone's #1 of all time

Tennis is starting to look a little silly with their proclaiming a new "best of all time" every ten years now

No, no he doesn't. He didn't start winning at a young age like Federer or Nadal. His style of play is so physical and given his past health conditions there's almost zero chance he'll catch Federer or Nadal's accomplishments

you're probably right about that overall (federer's 16 majors is 11 more than Novak has and Novak is only six years younger) - i'm just tired of tennis fans telling me they have a new "best of all time" player every ten years

To be fair, this era has been pretty amazing.

before nadal and federer there was agassi and sampras and before them there was bjorn borg and johnny mac

people forget (or never knew) that borg won 11 tennis majors in between 1974 and 1981
