In other news, RGIII claimed Stanford & Fla State were cheating as much as SEC pre-NIL

Also went into more detail on how schools cheated:
- Schools would set up independent bank accounts and $100K would just magically appear. Player would have access to the account.
- "unpaid" Summer internships set up, which we're actually cahs funneling avenues.
- claims Baylor never paid him under table
- Says 'wild west' claims now are no different than CFB was before NIL, just no coverage of it.
- Even Pros (Shaq said Lakers did it with him)

It’s silly that people think the SEC was doing anything more or less than any other conference.
The fact is the vast majority of high school talent resides in the south and naturally they’re going to go to SEC schools.

Richard Sherman vehemently denied anyone at Stanford was ever paid illicltly, then was swiftly community noted.

People were getting paid before but the fact that it was “illegal” kept the market regulated and helped give the schools some leverage. A Dodge Charger is a hell of a lot cheaper than a $3 million dollar NIL deal.

The SWC basically collapsed because most of the league (besides Rice) was cheating and on probation for most of the 80s and early 90s.
Jackie Sherill didn't end up at Mississippi State because he thought it was a step-up. Poor Jim Wacker tried to comply with the NCAA, and TCU still got nuked.
You can go back to the early 20th century and find stories of players being paid under the table. The pearl-clutching about the SEC and modern college football is laughable.

From all accounts, Aubbie had the best, almost unprovable, system in getting money to its players. A major booster owned many commercial cleaners. Players were directed to drop a jacket or heavy clothing off & then post game stop off the next day to pick his clothing up. With $$$$ stuffed in the pockets. The Little General supposedly shut it down upon hearing about it. Any other ways out there?

Once again, Stanford was historically one of the worst teams in P5 football
Then they get Harbaugh, and manage to win 11+ games in 5/6 seasons, and only 1 of those seasons was Harbaugh so you can’t say it’s just because they had an elite coach. They “figured” something out for that stretch
And that stretch coincides with RG3 time in college so it checks out

It’s interesting from the perspective of building a historical record to know what exactly went on back then. I wish more people would talk about it. Yea “everybody knew” the players were getting paid but we didn’t really know the mechanisms of how. It’s an interesting story that deserves to be told.

One is my uncle. In the 60s my grandfather was offered a tractor by Alabama. Apparently this was a pretty common tactic by Bear
Another is my cousin, he was a parade all American recruit in the 90s as a QB. One of the top recruits in the entire nation offered by everyone. He was never offered anything under the table.
So I think it depended likely on family situations etc
