I'm actually really excited to visit Detroit for the first time this fall when our Saints battle their Loins.
Me main mon Heady B is supposedly heading in with his tux as Arcade Fire is playing Motown the night before, so we'll have some epic tales to share with all of our TD mates.

Not really much worse than the astrodome.

I guess it isn't much of a dome anymore

Paintballing madness...

A couple summers ago this thing was still open for concerts. Apparently, some dude bought it for like a qtr. mil (which was still probably a huge loss). Pulling up, it was like some post nuclear holocaust scene. Big rolls of astro-turf rolled up the parking lot and nobody around. I thought they'd blown the f#%ker up years ago.
was bought at auction w/ no limit at between $500K - $600K... since it was built for $55M... it was a HUGE loss
new owner was trying to get a MLS team to play there... but no dice (esp when his ambitious renovation plan didn't pan out)
but yeah... considering all the Barry Sanders highlights from the Silverdome... pretty creepy and sad to look at it in that state

So...why wasn't it demolished years ago?
still housed some events... owner was trying to bring in a MLS squad

There's a blog called What's Left of Birmingham . Check it out. This guy breaks into abandoned buildings in Birmingham and photographs them. Fascinating stuff.

Yep, I remember it being an absurd figure. I couldn't stop asking locals since all I saw on itinerary was "Detroit" and didn't realize it was this place til arrival. Very surreal experience, somewhere I've got some iphone vid of me chucking frisbees over the field from around the box level.
Also been to Ford, which is pimp but pretty much a spaceship that's landed in a warzone.

I will never forget when Bob Seger played there.. His SAX player was swinging from the rafters of the pavilion while they started "Turn The Page"... Awesome shite......

Looks like Detroit used it for a evacuation shelter for about a week. What happened a major flood up there, crippling snow storm?

I too am fascinated by abandoned buildings and old venues. It's crazy how buildings from so long ago are deemed untouchable and historic, but some venues from our lifetime are trashed.
I collect stuff from these places, on a very limited budget mind you, and it's sad to see, especially the whole city of Detroit. There was a great site I used to visit called detroityes.com that had great virtual tours of the 'ruins' of Detroit. Tiger Stadium was amazing.
