quote:Can you remind me how many NHL players played for those teams or their competition?
They won Silver in 2022
Gold in 2018

Russia’s center depth is atrocious
Namestnikov
Kuznetsov (KHL)
Winger / KHL
Hard to believe there was a time when players of Fedorov, Larionov, and Datsyuk's calibers not only played at the same time, but on the same team

2026 will always have an asterisk next to it since Russia was excluded from the games.
They're arguably the strongest country when it comes to hockey.

there is no comparison when it comes to the defensive pairings that the US and Canada can put out on the ice and what Russia can
5 all star forwards. potentially the best goalie in the world
HUUUUUUGe drop off after that when compared to the US and canadian rosters
they would compete for a medal but would not have beaten either the US or canada

Your birth certificate should have an asterisk.

Now we're pretending that Russia isn't historically one of the best countries for hockey
Russia would have won bronze, but would not have beaten either USA or CAN in a semi final. They’d have replaced Finland in the final four most likely

Their strengths would be top 6 forwards and goaltending. I criticized Canada for being on the older side, while US's strengths were youth and balance throughout the lineup.
Russia's defense would be fairly awful, compared to other top teams. At best they are probably a bronze medal team this year. Goaltending is elite and possibly the best trio of any country. So there's that.

People who acknowledge that Russia would have been one of the favorites to win Gold if they were in
Which isn't so hot when there would be only 5 teams with actual medal chances

Russias only gold in Olympics was in 2018 and they weren’t even representing Russia so technically Russia has never even won Gold at the Olympics.
i mean this is true but the Soviet Union won 7 golds in 9 appearances
but yeah Russia isn't top dog in Hockey without those Czechia and Slovakian players

That was also when if you played for money in the USSR you were an amateur but if you played in North America you were a professional

Why would they be playing for the Soviet Union and not Czechoslovakia?

* (and Taiwan won every LLWS in the 70s because birth certificates were apparently issued 5 years after the players actual birth or something like that)...
Soviet National team was called the Red Army because they were in the Red Army, on paper, although Tretiak (the best Goalie in the World allegedly) says he never did a minute of Army training in his 15 years with the National team.
As for the Soviet golds, Canada boycotted International competition because of the Soviet professionals and said they wouldn't play in International competitions until they could use their best players.

Before the 1972 Olympics, Canada petitioned the IOC to use professional hockey players, claiming that the eastern European countries were using such athletes.
The IOC rejected Canada’s request, and the Canadian hockey team withdrew from the competition. Canada refused to send a hockey team to the 1976 Games as well.
Canada sent their amateur team to 1980 Lake Placid and stunk up the joint finishing in 6th place, as we beat their International nemesis with our amateurs.

So they do pretty well when NHL players aren’t allowed?
They do have the 2nd strongest professional league the KHL so that definitely tracks.

Russia’s center depth is atrocious and their D is nowhere near as good as US, Canada, Sweden, etc.
There’s a reason the term Russian Defense exists.
Basically just slashing and hooking your opponent and hoping a penalty doesn’t get called.

Why would they be playing for the Soviet Union and not Czechoslovakia?
Because in Czechoslovakia you could always find a hockey team, in Soviet Russia hockey team finds you.
