re: I love that the MLB is 162 games long.

Just wish MLB started the 162 sooner and finished sooner.
Baseball is the ultimate chill and hangout sport. The other thing that makes baseball great is when it’s important game and every pitch matters. To me it’s the finest spectator sport when your hanging on every moment and thinking about the strategy and potential plays.

It’s a good mix of chill and exciting. You don’t have to watch every game, but most nights you know your favorite team is playing and can tune in when you want. It’s easy to enjoy each game on its own for a few hours, regardless of the implications.
It’s also cool because you get to “spend more time” with the team that’s been built each season. You really start to root for these dudes individually and see their ups and downs. You get 162 teams to watch these guys in whatever configuration you have that year. Football doesn't allow for that at all.
MLB should have installed the replay on balls and strikes. The technology is there and it requires no time to simply get things right. I mean, how many at-bats are changed in a game because the umps miss a call at the plate? There is a huge change of mindset with pitchers and batters when a call puts a batter at 1 and 2 instead of 2 and 1.
I know that Manfred is a jerk of gigantic proportions and to expect him to take controversy out of the game is simply beyond his IQ, but nothing has indicated that this replay is not ready for primetime.

I feel the same in early April. I rarely stay around until all-star break. Usually check out before June and start paying attention come September

It's the exact opposite. The length of the season weeds out fluke teams, for the most part. There can be surprise teams
I have always thought after 162 games if they don’t know who the best 2 teams are and need 3 rounds of playoffs, then they are doing it wrong.
Take the best AL/NL team and play one 7 game WS or shorten reg season and allow more teams in the playoffs.
Play in games are dumb, imo.

I guess I'll be the first to disagree with you. Playing so many games is the main reason I've never been interested in MLB in my adult life. It feels diluted compared to a lot of other sports.
Mark, do you have a strong rooting interest for one major league team? I absolutely think that makes a difference as far as this discussion is concerned.

Love baseball.
Watching Cardinals at Pirates on Prime. St. Louis pitcher has no hitter thru six innings. And they've got their bullpen throwing.

I love MLB and don't want the season shortened
That said, I do tend to tune out mid-Summer for a bit before reinvesting

It’s great to have something I like to watch as an option basically every night from April to October, either as background or sit down and pay attention if I want. 81 games as possibilities to attend also for something to do.
I don’t get the people who say they like baseball but want the season shortened. Nobody is making you watch every night, and you can check scores and tune in as much or as little as you like

I like the long season, but I always wondered why they landed on 162. Google says so they could play their 9 rival team 18 times, but now they play everyone. Division opponents 13 times, some conference opponents 7 times & others 6 times, 1 cross conference opponent 6 times, the other 14 3 times

Baseball used to be a real thinking man’s game. That’s kinda been eroded by recent rule changes starting with the DH.

quote:I don't like that. There's too much interleague. It was great for the 1st couple of seasons, when your team, and the others in your division, played teams from one division from the other league. That was compelling. You wanted to plan to be at one of each of those games. I was at the very 1st interleague game on June 12, 1997, when the Rangers hosted the Giants that afternoon. My friend's dad had tickets in left field, right in the sun, close enough for Barry Bonds to hear us yell at him. Now those games have no special meaning. Your AL team just plays some NL teams at different times during the year. I don't look to see who they play or when they play them before the season. Early on I thought MLB scheduled interleague games at the same time for everyone. It seems like they're going on all the time now, hence it's not special.
now they play everyone.
Yes, I'm that guy.
