Yea it was a travesty that the most decorated college player of the last 25 years received what was basically a career achievement over a guy who never won shite incollege like Shaq.

Yeah, they aren't ad wild but they have bloody ending far more regularly than basketball fights.

I'm going to surely regret this comment, and really hope people don't think I'm comparing the character of all basketball players to those in this recent video, but basketball fights resemble the video in that huge thread on the OT.

That style of fighting is closely followed by a "thug" label.

Actully it was. Everyone knew Shaq was better, who cares about team awards. The players on the USA team even blackballed Laetner cause they knew it was bullshite

I'm not sure what was worse out of the two comments I just heard.

Laettner says the Duke fan base didn't get bigger or the UNC guy saying he felt Duke was always up to something.

Jalen Rose is ridiculous. Get over it dude. ESPN can do better than that loser. I don't like Duke but this guy has issues.

lolno. I've even read Jordan specifically wanted Laettner.

yea, who cares about stupid things like 'championships.' Laettner outplayed Shaq head to head in college on at least one occasion, and Duke beat LSU multiple times.

Either way, whether it was Shaq or Laettner, the Dream Team needed neither. You ridiculous LSU homers make it sound like the Dream Team lost in the Gold Medal game due to a lack of center production.

So revisionist by you. There was no way the Wooden Award and unanimous AA wasn't on that team. There was no clamor for O'Neal nationally.

So you think Laetner was better? So you admit to being wrong? Bold strategy cotton

I don't think he has a problem. He's just stating a fact. A member of the Fab Five would have been kicked out for sure. But certain players/coaches are allowed to get away with certain things.

Laettner is hated more now since he never matched his lotto pick potential in the NBA. If he had an NBA hall of fame career and won a title he'd be seen differently. You can be good in college and have an attitude but if you don't back it up in the NBA then you are hated and seen as a failure and being illegitimately arrogant in college.

Basketball was a lot more physical back then. Watch what happened in every Celtics-Pistons game. They called regular fouls on Flagrant 2s. Hell, the play where Laettern was thrown (not by Timberlake) into the beam would have been a guarantee tech a few years later.

Laettner v. Shaq, 1991 and 1992:

19.8 PPG, 8.7 RPG, 1.9 APG, 1.1 BPG
21.5 PPG, 7.9 RPG, 2.0 APG, 2.1 BPG

v.

27.6 PPG, 14.7 RPG, 1.6 APG, 5.0 BPG
24.1 PPG, 14.0 RPG, 1.o APG, 5.2 BPG

Yeah, Shaq was better. Laettner stole Shaq's spot on the Dream Team, and everyone outside of Duke apologists knew it at the time.

Shaq had more points, rebounds, blocks, and higher field goal percentage than Laetner in 92. Laetner had the better team.

Shaq was obviously the better talent compared to Laettner because he was the better talent compared to everyone.

But Laettner was the obviously better college player. People forget he went heads up against the Shaqs and Larry Johnsons and often out played them. People also falsely undervalue how much of Duke's greatness was Laettner himself. Absent Laettner the next year they took several steps back (a Duke team still stacked by college standards with Hill and Parks)

He was a more rounded player who could shoot from anywhere, could pass, and could fit in on a team already stacked with centers. He could also hit his free throws.

The hate comes from the success. The prep school arrogance that he seemed to personify (even tho he was apparently blue collar originally) and the racial undertones of his fan's love of his success (Duke is and was essentially the cbb equivalent of the 80's Celtics)
