I wish he was a free agent just to see what ridiculousness would end up happening

There hasn't even been a $300MM player yet, but $500MM seems reasonable?

I just don't see it happening. $300 would be the most I could realistically see. 10 years would be the max I would expect too.

I just don't see a team going past 10 years even with his age. Too much can happen in that time span.

Teams might be worried about giving more than 8 or 9 years, but I could easily see 27-30 mil per year

since his arb years would be bought out, it would be something like this:

10 years 260 And it would start off in 5-8 range then getting to 25-30 in last years.

His contract should be 2x more than what A-Rod's Texas Rangers deal was? That's ridiculous.

Not counting arb years. Straight free agent

Trout's projected salary for the next four years would be another debate

Maybe
$1MM
$12MM
$17MM
$23MM?

I have no idea

A decade later when he is 5 years younger? Yes. Robinson Cano is gonna clear a-Rod's contract, and he's not as good as A-Rod was. But the key here is there would be no late year albatross. In most longterm deals, the last few years are gonna be dead weight. Getting a 22-year old who is already the best player in baseball?

It would be unprecedented. With no salary cap, there is virtually no upper limit to what you would spend. I'd easily go $33mil a year and probably up to $40mil. For as long as I could get away with.

For $533 billion, there's zero chance he would NOT sign that.

Even if you adjust it for being a decade later, we are talking $325MM, not $500MM

Trout is 22, A-Rod was 25 well into the first year of his Rangers deal.

Trout wouldn't sign more than a 10 year deal and leverage himself out of a big second contract, so that puts you $330-400MM. Not $500MM...and certainly not $500+MM.

For reals though, when does he become a free agent?

I think it's after the 2017 season. He'll be like 26 years old, kind of puts him in a weird spot on years to take.

Perhaps we should revisit this thought after a 31 year old (allegedly) second baseman just got 240 million for 10 years.
