Football...let the chips fall where they may. It's too late to put that back in the box.
All other sports, I'd like all current D1 schools to be in regional pods and paired with other regional pods. Similar to how the NCAA creates geographically-sensical regionals/super regionals.
I've seen this floated around a lot and this would be my idealized non-football regional conferences:

The groupings are ok for soorts like tennis and golf. But I don't want to be in any conference called the Sun Belt.

We can call it Westbank Conference.

G5 needs their own national championship game

I think you should flip Sun Belt and Deep South given the Deep South in that graphic is heavily vested in Miami and Florida.

6 or 8 12 team conferences.
8 team playoff where conference champs all get a birth. Regionality and traditional rivalries would be sacrosanct. Post season would be based not on seedings or polls but on conference bowl tie-ins.
PAC 12, Big 10, Big 12, Big East, ACC, SEC, Mountain West, Sunbelt/American
Pac 12: Wazzou, Wash, Oregon, Oregon St, Cal, Stanford, USC, UCLA, Zona, Ariz St, BYU, Utah
Big 12: Colorado, Kansas, K-St, Mizzou, Nebraska, Texas, Texas Tech, Texas A&M, Baylor, OU, Okie St, Iowa St
SEC: LSU, Arkansas, Ole Miss, Miss St, Alabama, Auburn, Tenn, Kentucky, Vandy, S.Car, Florida, Georgia
ACC: Ga Tech, Fl St, Miami, UNC, NC St, Wake, Duke, Clemson, V-Tech, Virginia, Maryland, Boston College
Big 10: Iowa, Michigan, Mich St, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Indiana, Purdue, Notre Dame, Illinois, Northwestern, Ohio St, Penn St
Big East: Syracuse, West Virginia, Pitt, Army, Navy, Cincinnati, Louisville, Temple, Connecticut, Marshal, UCF, USF
Mountain West: Hawaii, San Diego St, Fresno St, Boise St, New Mexico St, Nevada, UNLV, Wyoming, Colorado St, Air Force, UTEP, Utah St
American: Memphis, Tulane, So Miss, La Tech, UAB, Co Car, App St, TCU, SMU, ECU, Houston, ULL
Rose Bowl plays PAC 12 vs Big 10
Orange Bowl: ACC vs American
Sugar Bowl: SEC vs Big 12
Fiesta: Mountain West vs Big East
Playoffs seeded after the bowls with 4 major bowl game winners and (maybe) top 4 teams. Next two rounds are at home stadium of higher “ranked” team.

From the bottom up, and from the middle out. Not the top down.

Nope. No rotation. You'd play EACH team in the conference EVERY year under my proposal.
Posted on 8/7/23 at 8:18 pm to MontyFranklyn
Honestly I quarter the country. SEC gets the bottom right, Big10 gets the top right, PAC12 gets the bottom left, something else gets the top left (Mountain West, Big 12, call it whatever you want).
Keep it geographical to help with travel load and rivalries. Each quadrant has at least one or two schools that are nationally relevant. Make 'em 16 schools each.
Have another 5 or 8 conferences for the schools that don't make the cut for the Big 4.

8 team playoff
5 conference champs auto bid
3 at large
I like all of this. And would add that the same system utilized to select the three at large teams would also seed the teams 1-8 with the four highest seeds hosting a first round playoff game. I would like to see the final four be hosted by the higher ranked teams as well, as it would make the regular season that much more important.
In reality, a team 12 seeded playoff with first round byes and on campus games is acceptable as well as long as the centralized scheduling you described becomes a thing.

I think college football will eventually consist of two superconfrences of 30+ teams in each, obviously these would be divided into east/west divisions.
FBS North would basically the Big 10 plus Notre Dame, Iowa St, Kansas, K-State, Cal, Stanford, Oregon St, Washington St, West Virginia, Utah, BYU and the northern ACC teams like Boston College, Stanford, Pitt, Virginia, and Virginia Tech.
FBS South would be the SEC, southern ACC teams (Clemson, Georgia Tech, Florida St, Miami, UNC, Duke, Wake Forest, NC State and Duke) and remaining BIG XII teams.

I don’t know, but I wouldn’t be entertaining Cal and Stanford being a part of the ACC. All of this has been absurd.

As in, don't do like the SEC or Big 10, and hoard all the power teams in 1 conference. Penn State needs a separate conference, as does USC, and Oklamoma.
I want to build towards an exciting playoff, not grind through a rough conference schedule and then face off against App State in the first round.
Posted on 8/8/23 at 6:23 am to MontyFranklyn
12 was fine, elevate the Mountain West to a power conference, bring back the BEast. 8 team playoff - all conference champs get a spot.
Boom. Done.
Boom. Done.

BCS algorithm
I like the use of the term algorithm here as if it was created by NASA or MIT or something

The BCS “algorithm” was 2/3 human pills, 1 that was made up of mostly retired coaches/media after the AP asked to not be included and the coaches poll which is mostly done by some assistant in the AD and is subject to conflict of interest and some computer polls made up by basically some fan who’s good with computer models with zero transparency since there were proprietary.
The Committee has picked what the BCS would have anyway and is at least transparent,
