How would you build conferences?

How many would you have?
What teams would go where?
What rules would you use to determine what schools are in which conferences?
The northeast of the country and the atlantic coast gives me problems when doing this.
Does GT, FSU, and Miami go the SEC while Clemson and SC go to the ACC?
Or does the SEC broadens its footprint and take the carolinas and virginia and the ACC no longer exists?
Do you include Army and Navy in a major conference?
So many scenarios

12-14 was the perfect range.

4 12 team P4 conferences with an 8 team playoff based on BCS algorithm would have been optimal IMO

Cap them at 10 schools...make them make sense, geographically.

Assuming tv money isn’t a factor, just what I would want to see?
I would have 5 or 6 conferences of 12 teams. Less than that and you don’t get enough variety at the top imo

1 Let each NFL team pick a school,
2 pay the players $50000 a Year,
3 kids wouldnt have to go to school
4 teams could call players up or down depending on need
5 schools could run similar offenses to Nfl counterparts
6 schools could still recruit
7 playoffs could be similar to Nfl playoffs

5x 12 team Power 5 conferences
Split into a new division with zero out of division games. Non P5 are just toast.
Mandatory scheduling:
-8 conference games, rotating
-4 OOC games, 1 against each conference, rotating - so everyone plays everyone at least once every 12 years
8 team playoff
5 conference champs auto bid
3 at large
Done and done.

1- Football would be separate from all other sports for both conferences and divisions.
2- Within a conference, every team would be required to play every other team each year. This would effectively limit conferences to nine or 10 teams unless they want to play an all-conference schedule.

Then just completely separate it from the college/university scene...

SEC worked just fine with 13.

Regional conferences, 8-12 teams (12 max)
States must border states
Basically revert back to how things were before the SWC died. Arkansas in the SWC. Maybe South Carolina in the ACC or they can stay if they want

12 teams per conference is the right amount. And they need to be geographical, not based on marketing. Without putting too much thought into it, this would be my first draft at realignment.
SEC:
ArKansas, Auburn, bama, Florida, UGA, Kentucky, LSU, Moo State, Ole Miss, Tennessee, USCe, and Vanderbilt.
Big 10:
Ohio State, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Northwestern, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Penn State, Purdue, and Maryland.
Big 12:
Texas, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Colorado, aTm, Baylor, Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma State, Iowa State, TCU and Texas Tech.
PAC 12:
USCw, UCLA, Cal, Washington, Washington State, Oregon, Oregon State, Boise State, Arizona, Arizona State, Stanford and Utah.
ACC:
Clemson, Miami, FSU, Duke, Georgia Tech, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Marshall, Wake Forest and West Virginia.
Big East:
Boston College, West Virginia, Missouri, Louisville, Pitt, Syracuse, Notre Dame, Rutgers, Cincinnati, UConn, Temple and Missouri.

18 teams MAX
Two 9 team divisions.
11 conference games.
Two OOC games. One of which has to be vs BIG10/BIG12.

As an A&M fan, bring back the SWC and give us a yearly OOC game with LSU. Basically our late 80s early 90s schedule.

Ten in the old SEC is my sweet spot. All of the other major conferences at that time were between 8-10 once Georgia Tech joined the ACC in the late ‘70s.

Can easily be done with a 16 team league. You’d just have 1 or 3 permanent opponents.

I’d redo the Big 12 for Mizzou, personally. Go back to the late 1980s when it was apparent that the SWC was dying. Invite Arkansas, Texas, and Texas A&M to get to 11 schools. Then invite Utah to round out at 12. Equal revenue sharing from the top down, and not as Texas-focused, maybe it would have survived.
The Big Eight standing alone was always screwed. Missouri was the most populous state in the conference, and it was doubling down in rural states like Kansas and Oklahoma. Would have never stayed competitive through the cable tv era without expanding into a state like Texas.

Bring back the Metro Conference.

I'd use the relegation system. Example Big 12 would be a Div.1 conference and their Div. 2 conference would be the Mountain West. All teams in Div. 1 conference split money equally, D2 teams get a lesser pay out. For bowl games school gets to keep majority of the payout. End of season the bottom 2 or 3 Div 1 (Big 12) teams get relegated, the top teams in D2 (WAC) move up

Look at how things were in 2009 and just leave it as is. That's obviously before the SEC expanded to 14 but it's also when Nebraska and Colorado were still in the big 12.
Things were much more logical and simpler back then.
