you said on this very board you never cared about the cavs before lebron james

This is true, and I will admit that, as I have multiple times before. But it wasn't because of LeBron (directly), it's because I did not have a team at that point. The Cavs were an Ohio team and were good. Perfect. Had the Cavs been like the Spurs with no stars (I mean that in the marketing sense of the word, not playing ability. Duncan's not a "star" from a marketing standpoint), then I would have still been a Cavs fan, because they were a good team. LeBron made the Cavs good, but I did not become a Cavs fan because I was a LeBron fan (if so, I'd be a Miami fan right now). I became a fan because they were a good Ohio team, and I did not have a favorite team, like I did in other sports.

In that sense, sure you could say I started off as bandwagon. I will NEVER deny that. But I have remained a Cavs fan in these crappy past two years, and not only that, but even a bigger one. You became an ND fan in a great era because of a great player who was electrifying. You have remained an ND fan even after years of a mediocre product with that player long gone. I don't think the chances of there being a "goodman81" on this site in 20 years is very high. You would not be an ND fan if you were a kid today. You started off as an Irish fan when they were good, in large part due to one player, and you have remained. That's like me. I started liking the Cavs in the LeBron era, yes. I remain a Cavs fan now during their garbage years, and actually follow them even more, as far as off-season moves and the like are concerned.

I also want to say LeBron winning/losing is not a huge deal to me. I don't want him to win, yes, but if he does, whatever. I don't have a personal vendetta against him, as I have stated clear in this thread. I don't hate the man. LeBron in the playoffs gives me something to root for (against?) which makes it more exciting, because otherwise, I could not care less who would win a series between Miami and Indiana. It's just that, sports. But should he win, whatever, good for him. I would take 15 LeBron Heat championships if it equals one Cavs championship. The Cavs winning is much, much, much more important to me than LeBron losing.

Pretty amazing. If the Cavs drafted Darko.....You wouldnt even be a fan of them now. Funny of how things work (assuming they never got any great players)

we need Cocks's input in this thread dude was for sure a cavs fan before lebron and was part of the back and forth threads when there was a legit debate who is better Lebron or Kobe. Now he does not speak so highly of Lebron

Was he on the board when LBJ was on the Cavs? I thought for some reason he was more recent than that.

Also, “sports hate” is different from real hate. It’s actually healthy, allowing us to blow off steam at what, when you get down to brass tacks, is your imaginary friend/enemy. We need people to hat in our lives without the actual baggage of hating someone and the damage that causes your real life. It’s a personal steam valve.

With that in mind, screw the Irsays.

Admire LeBron?

Not sure that many sports figures are "admired".

But I think 95% of this board respects LeBron and understands and accepts he is the best player in the NBA today.

I wish that were the case on this board.

Exactly. Being a sports fan in general is irrational and doesn't make sense. Why do I care if a group of 20 guys that have almost all never lived in the state of Ohio before being drafted/signed by the Blue Jackets - guys who I do not know personally and who have no idea I exist - are better or not than another group of 20 at putting a puck in a goal? Why do I feel pleasure or pain based on their ability (or inability) to do that? Why do I hate the athletic teams of quality academic institutions such as Michigan and USC, colleges who breed many quality educators, doctors, scientists, etc. that help the world? Why do I spend hundreds, even thousands of dollars to watch a bunch of athletes who do not know me play a game? Why do I come on here and take time out of my day to talk about these things, when I could be doing other things? I really can't provide a good answer, because there isn't one, and yet all of us on here do the same things. Sports are a way to break away from the real world a bit, and that's part of why we love them.

So I cheer against LeBron, a multimillionaire who makes a living playing a game, in a sporting event after he chose to play for another team over my favorite team, so what? If I'm going to watch a sporting event, I'd rather have something "at stake" anyway, because I get more enjoyment out of it and more into it as a spectator. Sure it may be irrational, but so are 99% of the things all sports fans do (like I mentioned in the first paragraph). When it moves beyond sports into wishing ill-will for the person outside of sports, that's when it's too far.

Sorry I'm late to this party, but I can understand the hate for him
But to question why people like him, and to not be able to see any redeeming qualities about the guy is pretty fricking stupid IMO

Interesting when you put it in that perspective

I hope Lebron gets 7 rings just to piss everyone off

I know I'm going to get ripped a new one for saying this, but o well...

Jordan not having a ring at 27 will most likely be MUCH DIFFERENT from Lebron not having one.

Lebron came into the league earlier, will not most likely not take anytime away from the game as Jordan did, and imho will be WAY LESS effective once his athleticism starts to diminish.

Yes, Yes, I realize Mike had amazing athleticism as well, but he also developed a game midway through his career that allowed him to rely on easy jumpers instead of physicality and brute force unlike Lebron. Maybe Lebron will prove me wrong and mature the same way...but something tells me he won't.

In other words, once his speed and hops go away, he won't be winning jack. For this reason alone I think he needs to be winning as many rings as he can while he's young.

Absolutely. I don't hide behind that fact. It's an irrational hatred that is the basis of most fans. And it exists in all sports in all fanbases and if you try to deny it then you are naive.

Agreed. Screw Kiffin.

Exactly. The average NBA career is roughly over 4.5 years. He spent 7 in Cleveland. That's about 7 years longer than most people want to spend in Cleveland period.

Taking time away from the game had no affect on why he didn't win one before he was 27.

LeBron can shoot a jump shot, but why do that when you have the athleticism to score point in the paint.

And either way, LeBron may not win 6 titles, but I would bet he wins at least 3.

It's over the top, but there's a sense that LeBron is a microcosm of why America hasn't been as great lately.

We're more prone to taking the easy way out these days than we are to practice the stick-tuitiveness that earlier generations displayed. Our kids are so coddled in schools now with the ant-bullying shite, the "dodgeball is cruel" PC nonsense, etc.

We're rather "play with friends in a fun city" than stick to our guns and remember where we came from.

Not saying I'd personally have done anything different than LeBron did (aside from the Decision, air dribbling basketballs in swanky Vegas hotels, and just being a huge douche in general) but that's the perception.
