Babe Ruth is arguably the only person who deserves to be mentioned above Ohtani.

Problem is this isn’t a Jordan situation…. None of our fathers or grandfathers even saw babe Ruth play.

Ohtani > Babe Ruth to me

I think there could be an argument for Willie mays and Barry bonds as well but it just depends how much you value the pitching. Personally I value it a great deal.

In terms of a human being or cultural differences? From what I understand, Ichiro was the exception, not the rule. It’s a very different culture and to some Americans probably seems snobbish.

None of his teammates seem to have bad things to say over two organizations.

He’s in a unique spot because he will never be the greatest pitcher or the greatest hitter, but he’s by far the best pitcher/hitter combo.

It’s hard to quantify- I’d say he is on track to be one of the greatest all around MLB players in history. He’s already earned a trip to the HOF.

I don’t know if we will ever see another talent that is just so good at swinging the bat and pitching.

It wasn't a cultural thing. It was some things that decent people wouldn't do to subordinates.

He’s amazing

But he hasn’t been enough to elevate his team up to the braves level so far in 2026

He certainly has shown in the past he can elevate a team to best in the league.

Not so far this year. Wonder if he is falling off?

currently yes, but again…all time it’s babe ruth. That’s not really arguable despite the difference in eras. Lots of recency bias here and that’s fine it’s not avoidable because nobody here saw babe ruth play nor has any frame of reference for just how much better he was than anyone else playing at the time. And just because ohtani can pitch doesn’t make him automatically the GOAT. Willie Mays for example was a much better fielder than ohtani is a pitcher.

And for what it’s worth I believe Barry Bonds is the best ever, because I saw him dominate baseball unlike anyone I’d ever seen before

These are all fair points - that is what makes these debates fun. There are few sports that have a true undisputed GOAT list.

Wayne Gretzky
Michael Phelps
Usain Bolt

Every other sport (golf, tennis, basketball, baseball, football, etc) have a legitimate argument for the GOAT.
