the word was that Chip had pretty much said Mariotta was gonna be the starter.

Nah, Chip doesn't work that way.

Writing was on the wall though. Chip closed practices, so even the fans had no clue how good he would be. The starting defense and team knew it. He was lighting them up while running the scout team.

Darron saw it and didn't want to be embarrassed. So he left.

mariotta was a nobody 2 or 3 star recruit

He was a high 3. Only thing that stopped him from being a higher rated recruit was where he played.

thought Bennett was better personally. dude was just as good at running and a better passer.

He was a tougher runner, but yeah I agree. Felt bad for the kid. Loved BB.

How did a school like Nebraska build a program from nothing to a powerhouse?

They built themselves into a name program before integration and since they were such a big name and exposure in college football was limited to such a few programs, they could go into Texas, Colorado, and California and snag guys away. Exposure changes and the changes in the game have taken them from national powerhouse to a 9 win a year team hanging on at the end of the top 25.

Here's an example. 5-star recruit Shaq Thompson who is from Sacramento, CA, was the 4th highest rated recruit at any position in the country.

He chose to go to Washington.

WTF.

Why?

he's a really good option QB who fits that system perfectly...but he wasn't a big recruit. that's the point

and he wasn't just some recruit the recruiting services missed on "because of where he played", he wasn't really recruited by teh actual guys paid to do the recruiting

the point is that UO recruits guys other guys don't b/c they use them in ways the other schools don't

Because of where he played. I'm sure there are a few studs that play in Wyoming, but since they are in Wyoming, no one ever hears about them or bothers recruiting them.
