This thread made me learn something why most Major Leaguers wear the glove with the palm out.
Always wondered about that...you would see it on TV and their hand would barely be in the glove.

According to Justin Stone of elitebaseball.tv, there are three reasons advanced baseball players wear their gloves this way:
Easier hinge action with the glove
Glove as an extension of your fingers
Creates an air pocket so you're not stung by the ball
In order to regain control of the glove fingers, players:
Put both their pinky finger and ring finger into the pinky slot of the glove.
Put their middle finger into the ring finger slot of the glove.
Put their index finger in the middle finger slot of the glove.
This means the index finger slot is empty (which was often empty anyway, as most players who put their entire hand in their glove would often leave their index finger out of the glove).

It’s legitimately night and day.
Once you put 2 fingers in the pinky slot, your world changes.

agree, there is a reason all the bg leaguers prefer 2 in the pinky method

Had no idea.
Why is this such a secret?
I guess if you grow up playing and stopped because you weren't elite, you never heard of this. I wonder when it started. Always thought index out was control but that was a long time ago.

Index out when I played infield when I moved to center my coach taught me the 2 in the pink and it was a revelation, the glove turned into a huge basket.
While we are at this for the outfielders did you crow hop or pro step?

You can take a brand new glove and use it right away with the claw grip. It’s a much more powerful way to close the glove.

I did the old school crow hop. Pro step is trending these days

I was a big crow hop guy growing up. When I got older and started playing a lot of travel softball a grizzled vet showed me how much time I was wasting. I had a much stronger arm, but he could get it in faster just with the quicker release.

Tangent.
Holtz Leather Company has an entire collection of wallets and other accessories made from baseball mitts.
They will even make items out of your own baseball mitt.

2 in the pink. When I was introduced to this in high school, I felt way more comfortable and never went back I felt like it gave me a much better and larger pocket and I had better control of the pinky end of the glove, which kept a lot of balls from bouncing out. I'm not sure when this method became popular though. That was about 10 years ago for me, and now the majority of jr high - high school kids I see and/or coach around here all use it as well.

index out, till sliding spikes ripped my finger open, den index in for rest of playing days...

It keeps the glove in a better shape and feels better when you’re catching or fielding a ball. Creates more of a rounded pocket.
Shoot. Why am I just learning this? I could still be playing if only Coach J had told me this (and taught me to improve my BA by about .150).

Is there any other way?

I don’t get the index out fascination. I always went index in traditional while playing infield. Outfield was 2 in the pink

Index out with a batting glove on. I didn’t like the feel of the leather in thumb for some reason.

Five fingers in five spaces, no finger out. Then again we weren’t Baez.
