How did the NFL experts whiff on Russell Wilson in 2012?

Like, when I saw him play at Wisconsin in the Rose Bowl, he looked like an NFL caliber player. Drew Brees is 6'0, and he was roughly 5'10 It didn't stop Flutie from becoming a QB either. Is there a height bias in the NFL?

NFL experts?

This board was determined to label Wilson as nothing more than a game manger for years.

There was a height bias, but it isn’t around anymore. See Mayfield and Kyler.

Russ was an above average QB in college. A game manager his first few years in the NFL and now a top 5 guy. His draft evaluation was a decent correlation imo to where he was picked and deserved to go at the time.

Was he 100% committed to football or was he still occasionally fricking baseball?

He was an absolute monster in college.

At Wisconsin he threw for 73%, 33 TDs to 4 INTs.

He had 3 straight 3k passing seasons in college.

109 TDs to 30 INTs overall.

I agree with the other post mentioning his height as such a factor. I also agree that height is longer a huge knock.

He never has been more than a game manager, choking away a Super Bowl was his career highlight.

He had beast mode and an incredible defense, he's basically Brad Johnson who can run some.

Brees and Mike Vick were around and drafted years before mayfield and kyler and they both are 6’0”

No QB wanted to be listed below 6ft in official measurements. Probably still don’t, but it doesn't have same negative drop in draft effect like it did in the past making teams overlook all the positives a QB has. Even 6ft was a little negative. If Drew Brees was a true 6’4” instead of 6’0” he would not have dropped into 2nd round. I also think if he was found to really be 5’10” or 5’9” he would have dropped below the 2nd round. Russel was 5’10” & 5/8ths at combine and drafted in 3rd round.

It isn’t that shorter QBs didn’t play or play well, but it definitely effected when they were drafted back when NFL Pro offenses wanted pure drop back pocket passers taking snap directly behind center. That didn’t start truly changing until after Russel was drafted in 2012.

I can’t remember if even though he told the Rockies he would focus on NFL in 2012 if baseball still effected his draft a little as well.

No, that fell on his DA OC for calling that pass when the Patriots were ready for it.

Andy Reid wanted to draft him, he wasn’t completely off the radar. Seattle took him, Reid settled for Foles.
