Weird opinion to me. The White Sox were always seen as the more exotic club in the city, going back to the founding of the American League.

Night games, fireworks, the wacky uniforms, and a lot of people believed the wrong ballpark in the city was torn down in the 90s.

Harry Caray started singing "Take Me Out To The Ballgame" on the South Side when he was the broadcaster for the Sox. Nancy Faust was the first organist to play pop music at the ballpark.

The Sox have played in the same neighborhood longer than any pro franchise in American sports. They are the ultimate local team.

The White Sox became popular when the moved to Comiskey in 1991-1992 and changed their logo to their current black and white “Sox” logo.

The Sox outdrew the Cubs and got the majority of local coverage throughout the 50s and 60s. They were wildly popular with Caray and Jimmy Piersall doing games in the 70s. Meanwhile, the Cubs were closing the upper deck at Wrigley as late as 1983.

The Sox ended up screwing themselves by voluntarily ditching WGN, firing Caray and Piersall, attempting to run their own PPV cable network to broadcast games, and ultimately holding the city hostage for the new stadium. It didn't help that the Tribune bought the Cubs and began marketing the club and the dump on Addison as a baseball shrine.

Suggesting the Sox only became popular after they moved across the street is silly.

Also helped that the Northside gentrification hit Lakeview right around the same time the WGN thing kicked in.

Idk

I would probably be a bulls fan if New Orleans didn’t get a team but I can’t be sure

Grew up in the 90s and the hornets came in 2002. There wasn’t really a long enough period between Jordan and a local team to see if the bulls would stick.

Failure to rebuild at all past the Jordan dynasty (which wasn't entirely Jordan, the Bulls' following was fine during Jordan's minor league baseball career).

Loads of misfires in the draft (Eddie Curry) and misfortunes (Jay Williams' accident, Derrick Rose's health)combined with not making a serious play at the major free agents with except for the steep downward slope of Dewayne Wade. The Jerry's were chaep.

The Bulls' streak of sellouts didn't end until 2 years after Jordan left the Bulls for a final time. Both the 13-37 Toni Kukoc lead 1998 team and the 17-65 1999 team with Elton Brand's rookie year sold out every game.

Any talk of the Cubs not really having a national following is laughable. It's not on par with the Red Sox/Yanks but it's in that next tier. My wife is from St. Louis and gets annoyed at all the places we've found Cubs fans.

Bulls don’t have it on the same level for a few reasons.

1) Gross ineptitude on the rebuild, bad luck. Eddie Curry was trash, Brand for Chandler was a bad trade, Jay Williams injury.
2) in coorleation, no free agent wanted to sign there...with the comps of MJ, how FO treated Pippen,Phil.
3) WGN has less of hold on Bulls games than previously. Back in the 90s, with a basic cable package one could catch Bulls and Hawks(TBS) games on the regular along with national broadcasts from TNT, NBC.
4) the 2010 revival was crippled,literally.

The Bulls need a FO overhaul and ownership needs to remember the White Sox will never sell the merchandise the Bulls will.

Cubs? Maybe bandwagon fans. Are we counting those?

I see more Dodgers and Braves fans than Cubs fans.

When the Bulls are good they have tons of fans outside of Chicago. Plus I would bet money that their team merchandise stays one of the best sellers

Well, for what it's worth, I see more Bulls caps in Munich than all others combined. But the people wearing them don't know a Jerry from a cherry. It's just a brand over here.

If I ever have time I’d love to sit and watch a WGN telecast from a random mid-1980s Cubs game. Maybe there’s some on YouTube.

Double benefit to this video...get some Harry and also a sense for all the places people watched the cubs back in the 80s. Kind of shows the influence of the super station back then.

Green Bay and Baton Rouge mentions

This is such a terrible take. How can you be a bandwagon fan of a traditionally shitty team?

In 2017/2018 the Bulls were top 10 in merchandise sales, so you are correct.

It’s a brand closely associated with winning and the most famous basketball player alive.
