7. Chicago Cubs World Series celebration – 5 million

It was the seventh largest gathering of people in the world behind only religious pilgrimages. I forgot to add in "one of" before largest gathering of people.

Wtf

Cubs are one of the largest fan bases in all of sports and that’s easily quantifiable.

Market research regularly shows MLB has 5 or 6 'national brands' that have widespread loyalty. The Yankees, Red Sox, Cubs, Dodgers, and Giants, with the Braves and Giants flip flopping by age group for 5/6.

Not a big MLB follower but I remember my Facebook was flooded with “My Cubbies!!!” posts during their run a few years ago. From people in Louisiana I didn’t even know watched baseball.

Cubs have a large fanbase but I wouldn't call it a national following.

A lot of people who like the Cubs grew up in a family who followed the Cubs.

The national following is due to Midwesterns moving down South or out West.
Think Arizona has more Cubs fans than their local team.
You don’t know what you’re talking about. There are a ton of Cubs fans around that have no connection to Chicago due to the fact that Cubs games used to be nationally televised on WGN.

Take New Orleans for example. There is no MLB team in New Orleans, but there are a LOT of Cubs fans. These are people born and raised in New Orleans and may never have even been to Chicago in their life. And it’s because they grew up watching the Cubs on WGN.

I'll never figure out why this is the case. It's so weird.

Because basketball is the team sport where one player makes the biggest difference. NBA since the mid 80s has done the best job marketing their players out of all the leagues. In a basketball game, the best players will be on camera 85% of the time; not so with other sports.

There’s just a lot of reasons why nba/basketball has more fans of individual players (instead of teams) than other sports. And it’s really not surprising that such is the case with MJ and the bulls.

It’s because black people don’t follow really bad franchises. The Bulls have been God awful more times than not since MJ retired.

The cubs are popular, but they aren’t in the same realm or stratosphere as Yanks, cowboys, lakers, or Sox

Those other teams have international appeal

White people will follow non-perennial winners. Bros follow winners like the Steelers, Lakers, Yankees, Alabama, Cowboys (no Super Bowls but usually have a decent team). The Bulls don’t fit that mold. Ain’t no brother gonna sit through all those shite Bulls seasons after MJ retired.

Correct. Growing up in Nola in the 1980s, we had either the Cubs on WGN or Braves on TBS, and the Cubs were preferable bc of Harry Caray. Cubs had a national daily broadcast when no other team did, and even when they sucked it was a joy to watch bc of Caray.

NBA fans are more likely to be fans of a particular player or bandwagon fans. Never saw any fans here of Cavs or Heat til Lebron. Never saw any GSW fans here until 5 years ago. Lakers are probably the only NBA team that can claim a national following that isnt a result of one star player. When I was in school in the 90’s everyone had Bulls Starter jackets and MJ jerseys. Now I havent seen a Bulls fan around in years except for at the SKC when the Bulls are actually in town

re: How come the Chicago Bulls don’t have a large national following?
Most people in the southeast who are baseball fans tended to grow up watching the Braves or Cubs between WGN and WTBS. And the Braves were godawful for much of the 80s IIRC while the Cubs won two pennants in that timeframe.

What an ignorant and asinine response. Maybe you should stick to tailgating at LSU road basketball games.
