How come the Chicago Bulls don’t have a large national following?

You’ve got the Yankees, Cubs and Red Sox in baseball.
Steelers and Cowboys have large national followers from people growing up in 70’s and those who remember Dallas’ titles in 70’s and 90’s.
Bulls won 6 championships in the 90’s. A lot of those who watched them are now in their mid 30’s and older.
Seems like it’s Lakers and Celtics as the most popular NBA teams. Chicago is a big market too. Just seems odd.

I believe they only had their championship runs with MJ but were a subpar team during most of their franchise history.

You see Cubs fans and merchandise from coast to coast. Not sure what you’re laughing at.

Not to mention that after the 2016 World Series the celebration in the park was the largest gathering of people in the entire world and certainly the largest for the United States.

Not really

Cubs are easily one of the most popular sports franchises in the US. Tons of Cubs fans outside of Chicago.
With the Bulls I think it’s just that outside of the Jordan era they have been an average to mediocre team.
Lakers and Celtics have both had Championship runs in each decade.

Not sure why you are laughing. Thanks to having games on WGN many fans across the nation grew up watching Cubs baseball.
It gave fans across the nation access to the Cubs more than most other teams. As a result they do have a very large following.

Cubs have a large fanbase but I wouldn't call it a national following.
A lot of people who like the Cubs grew up in a family who followed the Cubs.
The national following is due to Midwesterns moving down South or out West.
Think Arizona has more Cubs fans than their local team.
Moat people abandoned ship when the Bulls started to lose after MJ left.
In the 1990's the Bulls probably had more fans than anyone else.
But those were MJ fans not actual Chicago Bulls fans.

I see what you're doing here.
It's obvious as it always was.
On how huge Jordan was.
Nobody gave a shite about the Bulls before Jordan, they were fricking North Dakota as far as NBA fans felt.
Everyone knew once Jordan left, and they lost consistently again over and over and over again...
It would revert. It's why Chicago went gaga, OMG we don't suck!
Terrible basketball city but for Jordan. It's all the stupid losers...in baseball. And the Bears.

It’s the NBA.
People are fans of players, not teams. One player could dominate in basketball...and it was Jordan
I wonder if his career played out now, how many people would have become Wizards fans when he played in DC.

and those two years of D Rose.
Chicago is a hungry city for a winner.
That series against Boston in 10? was crazy
That arena was full of energy.
You only get that in a few places.
Most NBA arenas are bandwagon fans.
You can tell the difference between the genuine passionate and the face painters.

I think the problem was 3 fold:
1) the two Jerrys were fricking despised. They came off as cheap and petty.
2) they lost all of their talent at once, which made it seem more like a fluke
3) they didn’t just get worse, they fell off a cliff and were a joke

Jordan ruined the Bulls. Can't watch em anymore. It's like having sex on Molly. It's never the same afterward.

Blackhawks are way more popular in Chicago than Bulls
