Joe Paterno is 83 years old and we know he will be gone sooner than later, so I was wondering what people thought about the job. The job itself IMHO is easily at top 5 job in the NCAA.

I would think that to be the person to replace Paterno would be almost setup to fail, but after that all bets are off. I think when he does leave they will get an ok coach but not a superstar.

Paterno has another decade in him easily. So I would call it a top 15 gig.

I suspect Penn State will probably land one of those NFL coaches that fails next year.

no way. It's the #3 job in the Big-10. I'd say it's around number 10 or so

I'd want to be the guy that follows the guy that followed Joe Pa.

Al Golden at Temple is the heir presumptive to Joe Pa IMO.

They are really shooting for the moon on that one. Is he the best they could come up with?

I'd say Schiano, or maybe even Joe's son Jay would be good. He's been an assistant there forever.

I think it will be Schiano, he turned down many jobs waiting for this job. Plus he is a guy who has the northeastern ties needed.

It would be tough for them to get a top coach that is currently at a school in the South just because of the fertile recruiting those guys have that PSU wouldn't have based on proximity.

Al Golden and Schiano seem to be the popular picks, but I would try to get Fitzgerald from NW.

Good call. I think he would be a great recruiter (much like Harbaugh) at a top program.

I imagine they will promote from within when Joe Pa steps down.

Fitzgerald is coaching his alma mater - not a chance in hell he would leave for Penn St.
