Joshua Staley is not against a shot clock in high school basketball but the AC Flora coach was glad there wasn’t one Tuesday.

Staley had his team hold the ball for the entire four-minute overtime and the strategy helped the Falcons advance to the Class 4A Lower State championship. After Robert McCray, an AC Flora junior point guard, was fouled with 1.1 seconds left, he hit two free throws and then hit another after a technical foul was called on the Marlboro County bench as the Falcons went on to beat the Bulldogs 56-53 in front of a standing-room only crowd.

Marlboro’s bench was livid over the call and was hit with a technical. Sheriff’s deputies and school officials had to restrain some of the coaches.

After the game, police had to restrain some of the fans on the court. The wild incident marred a fantastic atmosphere for basketball in which the gym filled up almost 30 minutes before the game.

So if you’re the opposing coach and realize what is happening, what’s the plan. If they are in the bonus you foul their worst free throw shooter? If they’re not in the bonus you keep fouling until they are? If you just play defense and let them take the last shot, there’s about a 40% chance it goes in and you lose and a 60% chance they miss and it just goes into another OT.

Would have fouled with 10 seconds.. then went down and won the game after freethrows.

Basketball without a shot clock is not basketball

Total joke

there's still 5 second calls in high school basketball.
If they have no intention of scoring, and you can't defend a guy for 5 seconds while your teammates deny, you deserve to lose.

Good strategy by the winning coach. Bad strategy by the losing coach.

Had a coach do this against me in the 4th period. After 20 seconds or so I caught on and told my team to foul. They made both.

We went down and tied. Put on a press, they broke it so we fouled. They hit 1/2 from the line. We got a layup.

Forced them to abandon the plan. They missed on the next trip. Was forced to foul us. Sadly we missed some fts and they sank a late 3 to beat us. It did force them to stop stalling though

Jordan won a title for a coach who ran Four Corners against Georgetown.

Why should I get some help. Looks like his strategy got him into the championship. Unless I’m missing something the goal is to win.

Use the rules to your advantage. He did that. Might not be pretty or exciting but it got the desired result

The losing coach is the one that needs help if he could not figure out how to stop someone from stalling late in the game. Not exactly a tough strategy to break

That sounds good in theory.. but it if they have 2 decent guards who can dribble, it is not hard for them to play keep away... I witnessed it locally at a HS game this year. PG would hold the ball in the corner right past halfcourt..once defender came out that far, he would take off dribbling to the FT line, then dribble back to the other corner at halfcourt..pass it to the other guard , who would do the same thing... forced the opposing team to try to trap the ball...once they got em in rotation a few times, the team with the ball would attack and have numbers

In High school the goal should be to also teach your players the game of basketball.

I would try and run a triangle and two. Keep my big men low to prevent an easy layup. Trap with the two and tell the top of the triangle to try and read the passing lane to the other guard.

Once you cut out that lane force it to a weaker ball handler and trap them and try and force them into a turnover or bad shite.

In youth leagues, yes.

In high school practices, yes.

In high school games, the goal is to win.
