Ehh, they weren’t as good defensively as 2011 Alabama. 5 of 11 starters from that bunch were first round draft picks. 4 of those guys are still playing at high level
Maybe so, but when you factor in the respective offenses, 08 Florida was easily a more complete team.
Bonus- Florida also won a conference championship that year

In my lifetime...
Desert Swarm was so fricking awesome.
No. 1 Miami - Arizona gave up eight points in a one-point loss.
No. 1 Washington in November - Arizona gave up 3 points.
Nobody has ever held two #1 teams to 11 points in one season.
"In '92, this was the team that started out the year struggling," he says. "Then we played two #1 teams in less than a month. We played Miami in Miami, with our 3rd team QB, and they beat us 8-7.
Then we played Washington, and we beat them 16-3. That team had Mark Brunell, Lincoln Kennedy and Napoleon Kaufman and they didn't get in the end zone. We played two No. 1 teams and they only got one touchdown in eight quarters.
Even more impressive is the fact that the '92 Huskies team was undefeated at the time and had just steamrolled 15th ranked Stanford 41-7."

Alabama held two number 1 teams to 9 points, it just happened to be the same team each time

Okay, but that’s a dumb thing to say when you’re referencing the 2011 Alabama defense that was historically good and historically talented

So who was better?
They didn’t give up 1,000 yards rushing on the year in 13 games. They ranked first in total defense, pass defense, run defense, and scoring defense. They gave up 8.2 ppg and 184 ypg. They gave up over 1,000 yard less than the number 2 defense that year. Try to wrap your mind around that. They did that with 5 first round picks on the field in the nickel package, which was essentially the base defense. It was an historical defensive unit any way you want to slice it. 10 guys from that two deep are still playing in the NFL. Please tell me who was better in your lifetime.

You’re out of your mind. ‘05 Ohio State is particularly comical. shite, they weren’t as good as ‘05 Alabama, much less ‘11 Alabama.

My favorite season of the past decade, and it's not even close. CFB just seems so mediocre now.
That was the year SC's Natty hopes were murdered by a midget in Corvallis. Phucking 'quizz Rogers. SMDH.

That 2011 Bama team was loaded but UF had more NFL production. A lot of busts from that Bama team.

That team was absolutely incredible.
And returned all 11 starters on defense in 2009. Plus Tim Tebow and a loaded offense.
The 2009 SECCG is one of Alabama's most impressive victories under Saban. Also one of Urban Meyer's most disappointing coaching jobs in his career.

What defenders from 08 UF produced in the league? Dunlap and Haden with Spikes for a few years? Haden being the only one that was ever upper echelon at his position. Mosley, Hightower, Clinton-Dix are all elite NFL players from that defense. Kirkpatrick and Barron are good NFL players from that defense. Square, Stinson, and Upshaw are all still playing. Where are the busts? Was Trent Richardson the only guy drafted from that team that you remember?

quote:OSU in 2005 had a higher rated defense according to SRS and S&P+. OSU gave up 15.2 PPG but their opponents averaged 31.8 PPG, had an Offensive S&P+ average of 33.6, and had an Offensive SRS average of +6.4. Alabama gave up 10.2 points PPG but their opponents averaged only 24.4 PPG, had an Offensive S&P+ average of 25.5, and had an Offensive SRS average of-1.4. So while OSU gave up 4.5 more points, the offenses they faced were about 7.7 PPG better than Alabama's.

Here are the defensive ratings for that year.
Defensive S&P+ (lower is better)
OSU--12.4
Alabama--13.2
Difference--0.8
Defensive SRS (higher is better)
OSU--15.88
Alabama--12.74
Difference--3.14

That’s a chicken and egg debate. Of course their opponents outscored Alabama’s. Alabama played in a league with SIX top 20 defenses that year. Ohio State played in a league with two.
To call the 2005 OSU defense better than 2011 Alabama is pretty terrible though.

In addition, the 2005 OSU Defense had 3 players taken in the First Round of the 2006 NFL Draft and 2 more players taken in the third round:
Year---Name---Round---Pick
2006---Hawk---1---5
2006---Whitner---1---8
2006---Carpenter---1---18
2006---Youboty---1---70
2006---Schlegel---1---76
In addition, the following players were drafted in later drafts, but saw significant playing time.
Year---Name---Round---Pick
2007---Pitcock---3---98
2007---Richardson---5---138
2009---Jenkins---1---14
And these players were later drafted but were deep in the depth chart, but saw some playing time:
Year---Name---Round---Pick
2007---Gholston---1---6
2009---Laurinaitis---2---35
2009---Washington---4---102

Tressel's best team, IMO. That team was rolling at the end of the season.
