With zero traffic maybe.
OHare is over 100 miles from South Bend
80% of that drive is the toll road that you can go 80 on the vast majority of the time. Midway is closer, but that place is scary.

I really don’t care about shopping but I love dive bars and restaurants that are unique to a town. Any of those?
Evil Czech on Main in Mishawaka is a great local place and would be my personal rec for something different in the $50 a couple range. It's a brewery with some pretty different food choices. If you feel like something a little more upscale, Corndance is owned by the same people and is a bit higher end, a couple with drinks and dessert would spend about $100. They have some great aged steaks and have a entree special with different meats daily wood grilled and skewered on a stiletto dagger. It's nice.
If you want to drive about 15 miles to Elkhart, Five Star Dive Bar has fantastic local burgers. Real different stuff.
Obviously South Bend is a standard midsize city with a downtown area that has its share of local bars and fare, I just dont go there often.

Yes it is awesome. I drove two times from the Northern Suburbs to South Bend on Saturday. The drive isn't that horrible Saturday morning from Chicago to South Bend. But if you fly into Midway or O'Hare on Friday be prepared for horrible traffic. It's especially worse on Fridays with so many people visiting and getting out of Chicago for the weekend in addition to the normal Rush Hour Traffic.
If you're adventurous and want no traffic fly into Kalamazoo, MI and rent a car to South Bend on a Friday. Much easier drive and fly back on Sunday. But you are taking more of a chance if your flight gets cancelled or delayed.
If you really want to chance it fly into O'Hare or Midway early Saturday morning and drive to South Bend. It's doable. You can take the train to South Bend from Chicago but I don't know how frequent it is on Saturdays.
My advice fly into Chicago Friday before 2:00pm rent a car stay in Chicago and drive to South Bend Saturday morning. They have huge parking lots at Notre Dame where you can park and even tailgate.

Notre Dame might be undefeated coming into that game.
Notre Dame's only games on a college campus will be in South Bend. The Irish will play more games in Europe than on an opponents' campus. They play in 5 different stadiums that hosted NFL teams this season.
"Road Games" in 2020
week 1 in Dublin Ireland
week 5 in Bank America Stadium (Panthers)
week 6 in Lambeau Field (Packers)
week 8 in Heinz Field (Steelers)
week 12 in Mercedes Benz Stadium (Falcons)
week 14 in Memorial Coliseum (Rams)
Uh, that's a College campus.
USC is literally across the street.
It's closer to campus than most College Stadiums.

Yes. Went to UM/ND game back in 2008. Really cool, but small campus. Game sucked because UM took a beat down and it was a downpour of rain for most the game. The 5 something hour drive home back to mid-Michigan was awful being soaked.

They throw piss balloons and yell "Suck that Irish dick bitch" at little kids, you probably don't want to go.

south bend IN might well be the ugliest town I’ve ever seen. The campus is OK and the the stadium is obviously legend, but as far as pageantry, atmosphere and partying notre dame is way overrated

Yeah, and as others have mentioned. The campus is great. The surrounding area is awful. Make sure to go light a candle at The Grotto. Also visit the Church, it is beautiful.

It's been over 10 yrs but when we went, the concession stands did not serve ice in their cokes to cut down on the booze. The tailgating was a lot "fancier" picture The Grove @ O..Miss all over the campus. Stayed in Chicago & had a blast On Rush St.both nites, easy drive to S.Bend the next day.

Yes sir. I saw LSU vs ND. Great atmosphere and fun time. Flew into Chicago and drove up.

Yep. Tailgating was very wine and cheese. Very, very tame compared to most college tailgating. Although I went to school at WVU so my tailgating standards are pretty high.

South Bend, outside of the University, is kind of a shite hole to be honest.
This. There are a handful of Midwestern college towns that are pretty cool: Ann Arbor, Iowa City, Bloomington (Indiana), for example.
Unfortunately South Bend is at the other end of the spectrum, right alongside W Lafayette...
