Watching the video now. What strikes me with the benefit of hindsight is how silly and inappropriate it seems that Breen and Walton continue their commentary during the brawl. Especially Breen, who keeps doing his “announcer voice” during the whole thing.

Best part is Tim Donaghy reffing the game. He’s looking around pissed like this is gonna blow his bet.

Remember it well. Was dozing off on my sofa in Kennah bra. It woke me up, couldn’t believe what I was seeing.

20th century version of this was when Rudy T got punched by Kermit Washington. there's an excellent book about it called, "the punch" by john feinstein
quote:
When Washington saw Tomjanovich, he turned and threw a hard right hand that landed just below Tomjanovich’s nose.
Tomjanovich fell to the court, blood gushing, his face shattered in four places, spinal fluid leaking from his brain.

I love Bill Burr’s comedy set on this talking about regular joes getting their arse kicked.

Me and my dad never watched NBA, but for some reason we had NBA on that night after I had gotten home from a friends house. I'll never forget the NBA Tonight crew blaming the fans

quote:No. It was the older guy in the Blue shirt/ White cap who's grabbing Artest as he runs by. Then grabs Artest from behind.
Wasn't it the guy in the green and white shirt that threw the cup and just leaned out of the way for black shirt to take the brunt of it?
" The 41 year old John Green was sentenced to 30 days jail......two years probation for one count of assault & battery for punching Artest during the brawl" .
Green was ready.

Watched it again just a minute ago and it's crazy how dangerous that could have gotten. Very fortunate that no one got really hurt.
And I forgot how good those Pacers teams were.

First time I paid attention to the NBA in nearly five years.
The NBA deflated after Jordan left.

I love the story about Ron Artest in the locker room after..
quote:
“I don’t think Artest was thinking at the time,” Jackson said. “Me and Jamaal Tinsley every time I see him we laugh at this. Right after the brawl, we’re in the locker room. And this is why I said [Artest] never said ‘thanks.’ So we’re in the locker room, legs all scratched up from hopping over the bleachers, our adrenaline pumping, we laid a couple people out, like we did something, know what I mean? We all sit back, and Ron Artest aka Metta World Peace, leans back and looks at Jamaal Tinsley and asks us, ‘do you think we’re going to get in trouble?’ I said ‘Ron, in trouble?! We’re lucky if we still have a frickin job!’ That was the funniest thing ever. Trouble? We’re lucky we have a job Ron.”

While this was bad, the NBA dodged a major bullet with no fans getting seriously hurt or potentially killed. And imagine if this happened today. The Garret media coverage would be child's play in comparison.

Pacers were a legit title contender until Artest threw a grenade into the season. You can thank Artest for the ridiculous “7 techs equals a 1 game suspension” rule as well as the Suns getting screwed in 2007(?) for leaving the bench after Horry checked Nash.
Watershed moment for the NBA

Prime Artest was a beast. Think I might have passed out if I saw that sumbitch running at me ready to swing.
Remember when he elbowed Harden and Ibaka tried to go up to him? Artest gave him the crazy eyes and Ibaka wanted to part of it.

3 min mark is greatness...not sure who the player is but he get very wet, and then gets some popcorn on him too...LOL
I felt that Stephen Jackson should have gotten as much suspension time as Artest.

Ben Wallace doesn't catch enough heat for this. He completely escalated the situation by shoving Artest and repeatedly trying to go after him.
