Half-baked idea: what if several bowls staged their own four-team tournaments?

Each bowl who participates and attracts four participants could stage its semifinals at home or semi-home sites the week after the CCG's, and the bowls themselves would be their tournament finals.

Fun rule--a school can't have a home game in a bowl semifinal two years in a row. Another--can't go two straight years without selecting a G5. For shiggles, I'll err on semifinals being non-regular-season rematches.

(Loosely going by this year's FPI, and selecting the CFP field without duplicates from a single conference)

CFP: Alabama, Clemson, Penn State, Notre Dame

Tournament of Roses: UCLA @ Washington, Iowa @ Michigan

Tournament of Sugar: LSU @ Georgia, Memphis @ Oklahoma

Tournament of Oranges: Miami @ NC State, Central Florida @ Ohio State

Tournament of Cotton: Texas A&M @ Texas, Cincinnati @ Wisconsin

Tournament of Nachos: Boise State @ Oregon, BYU @ Oklahoma State

Tournament of Peaches: South Carolina at Auburn, Virginia Tech @ Florida State

Tournament of Gators: Tulane @ Kentucky, Syracuse @ Maryland

Tournament of Imagineering: @ Florida, Michigan State @ Virginia

Tournament of Boomerangs: North Carolina @ Mississippi State, Temple @ Nebraska

The other bowls--especially the northern ones--can be encouraged to stage a Labor Day Weekend kickoff classic instead of a Christmas/NYD bowl in a time when no one wants to visit their cold arse cities.

You already have players sitting out bowl games, an extra meaningless game is pointless.

There's still enough players to play.

I would say yes since we are up to the mid 30’s in bowl games now. It’s not ticket revenue driving the bus for all the games.

Be prepared to be downvoted to oblivion, since people don't like ideas that are not inside their little box. LOL at people who think upvotes or downvotes mean anything. Anyway, who's Florida gonna host in the tournament of imagineering? This would be an interesting idea, as long as we eliminate the other bowls that do not include conference champions (or do a few tournaments for the G6 teams - total of maybe 56 or 60 teams play). I would keep the Celebration Bowl, though. I love crazy ideas; unfortunately, I don't see anyone going for this, cool as it sounds.

There’s already too many bowl games as it is

And this is coming from a fan of a program that benefited from there being too many bowls.

No idea. How about the Sun Belt champ?

This would reduce the number of bowl games.

I like the premise.

It would be cool also if two games played back to back in these stadiums (at least indoor venues) with big entertainment in between the games. You buy a ticket for an all day event.

Or we could just have a real playoff w/all conference winners and a few at large selections... you know, like every single other level of football in the country?

Reduce the regular season to 10 games and I’d be for it.

So teams that have the potential to play in a playoff at the end of the year, and other teams that have a 12-game schedule, are going to essentially agree to play in two extra games at the start of the season? How are those teams determined and what’s the incentive for playing those games and then having to play a 12-game schedule, a conference championship, and the playoffs? Do those teams qualify for other bowl game tournaments at the end of the season, too?

if all conferences got a bid, what's to stop the entire SWAC from moving up and demanding one?
