For those of you who need a recap of this story. Jordan Chiles won bronze in the individual floor routine after an appeal by Team USA was accepted by the judges, awarding her extra points for the difficulty of her routine. That moved her from fifth place, behind Romanian gymnasts Sabrina Maneca-Voinea and Ana Barbosu, to third place and the bronze position. However, after the medal ceremony, the Romanians appealed the decision by the judges and was able to get the finish reversed. It turns out Team USA submitted their appeal five seconds after the allotted time to appeal of 60 seconds had come to an end. So Barbosu was given the bronze and Chiles was ordered by the IOC to give back her medal. However, a further plot twist emerged when Team USA attempted to appeal the revised finish, arguing they had timestamped evidence that they had indeed submitted their appeal on time. However, the arbitration board refused to see this new evidence, arguing their ruling was final.

Now Chiles is refusing to return the bronze medal to the IOC.

Fox News

In other words, this is a total shite show. For one thing...that medal should not belong to Chiles or Barbosu, it should belong to fifth place finisher, Sabrina Maneca-Voinea. She scored as low as she did because the judges ruled she had stepped out of bounds during her routine. However, instant replay clearly shows she did not step out of bounds. You can't appeal that, however, so she loses no matter what.

The judges really failed in this event.

Whoever stood on the podium and heard the anthem play (Jordan) is the only winner

even if Jordan did send the medal it would be so hollow

This why subjective scoring events are the worst part of the Olympics.

I don't know that the medal should belong to the 4th place girl. It sucks the judges messed up but it happened in real time on something that's not reviewable. It's not the same situation as the error they made with Chiles.

This isn't a subjective issue though. It's very much objective and a clerical type error.

The judges fricked up but in real time. The committees afterward with ample time failed, especially by basically not allowing the American side to defend themselves.
They already gave the other girl a medal so they don't need it. She's right for telling them to go frick themselves. .

They fricked up royally everywhere here

This is a rare situation where I am fine with the “participation mentality” and multiple people getting the bronze

The fairest thing to do would be to give the 5th place girl the bronze since they messed up her score originally by saying she went out when she didn’t and she’d be in 3rd even if they allowed Chiles to keep her boosted score.

The Olympics have outlived their usefulness, especially with World Championships occurring in nearly every Olympic sport every two years. The IOC is just as corrupt politically and financially, if not more so than FIFA , Cycling, and Boxing.

The Olympics are way better than the world championships, even with the overbearing political aspect.

So the dipshit Arbitration board can render a decision long after the event ends but cannot look at all the evidence? F those POS.

My biggest question is, if Team USA has video evidence that their appeal was made within the 1 minute window, what evidence did the committee use to overturn Chile's bronze to begin with. Something doesn't add up.

That's really the only answer, right or wrong.

You need finality in sports, at the time, so everyone can move on....once the wreath is worn and officials have left the building,

Why the hell would she return it? Some things you can’t take back.
