Anytime you guarantee the biggest upset in the history of professional football and proceed to deliver on it while calling the game against arguably one of the greatest single-season teams of all-time, you're a football legend pure and simple not to mention his talent as a tough drop-back passer is unimpeachable. If only he didn't shred his knees at Bama would we have witnessed arguably the greatest quarterback's career maybe ever, dude was one of the first great transcendent high school quarterback prospects in the sport's history when he decided on Alabama the John Elway of his time.

Who knows. It's hypothetical, but QBs like Brees have benefited greatly to the change in defensive holding and the like where accuracy can trump a stronger arm (not that Marino wasn't accurate). Marino's arm was so good that he trusted it too much at times which led to more ints. But man, if you aren't old enough to have seen him when he burst onto the scene in his 2nd year, it was a sight to behold.
There's a reason when the all-time greats of that time are asked who was the best Qb, most say Marino.

You think Marino would just be ripping balls downfield? That’s laughable. You know as well as I do he would be throwing hots and comebacks.
Modern offense is not go ripping it. And the Saints take shots a bunch. Bree’s just isn’t some dink guy. And I’m a Saints hater and love Marino.

I get what you're saying. With today's rules it would be difficult to put up appreciable more stats because there's only so many possessions a game.

What i would love to see is Marino in Kendall Briles offense as they run a Slot Go and digs. That would be fun.

The one knock on Marino was the he was a statue back there. Lots of offense today that require at least some mobility.

Eli in a heartbeat.
Its not like Eli lacks arm talent. Dude has plenty.
Namath:
173 TDs, 220 INTs
Eli:
340 TDs, 229 INTs
I won't bring up completion % because of the era's, but that TD/INT ratio is not something I can look past. And Eli has been just as, if not more clutch, on the biggest stages.
Namath wore fur and called his shot in a victory. He's in the Hall of Fame for his personality, not his game.
I don't think Eli should be in the Hall either, but he's a better QB than Joe.
He's also a lot bigger and more durable.

Him winning AFL POY were both a fricking joke. He didn't lead the league in a single passing statistic either year and had 15 TDs to 17 INTs in 1968 (his first).
It was an even bigger popularity contest for major market players back then as it is now.
The year he threw 4,000 yards he had 26 TDs and 28 INTs and attempted 64 more passes than the next guy.
ETA:
I'll concede he was a gunslinger, but he certainly was not a "great" quarterback. If he was a boring person that played for Buffalo, no one would ever talk about him.
