Kind of off topic but how great would it have been to have a playoff in the 90s. Those Nebraska v Miami and Nebraska v FSU games always delivered then you throw in a Spurrier led Florida, a Penn St. or an Alabama rotating every year or so and it may have been the best era of competition.

Not so fast. DeBoer won 14 games last year at UW!

Miami lost Jimmy Johnson after the 1988 season, then won two national titles with Dennis Erickson.

Plus he has a legit star at QB coming back and a top 5 overall roster in terms of talent. They’re going to be in the hunt again this season, DeBoer’s challenge will be keeping it going beyond this year.

Thank you. My $3000 annual donation to my alma mater has indeed been well spent.

Though I am curious: how much do you give to your favorite school's athletic program?

The only argument against UF during that time would be the Zook era (2002-04).

90s Nebraska was crazy. Their 5-year record of 60-3 was incredible. Won 3 NCs in that span and a blown call and a missed FG away from winning 4.

Throw those Pete Carroll USC teams in there too. Loaded with talent and finished in the AP Top 4 seven straight years, going 7-1 in the Big 4 bowl games with the only loss being that epic Vince Young Rose Bowl game.

Yeah, but...

1. They didn't have to play Penn State in 1994 or Michigan in 1997.

2. Terrible Big 8 conference from 1990-1995 and few strong non-conference opponents. Lost a couple of key games (Texas 1996 and 1999) when the conference competition picked up a bit with the move to the Big XII.

3. Four seasons with fewer than 10 wins and ranked outside the top ten.

FSU was more consistent in the '90s and had a 2-0 H2H record vs. Nebraska. I would take FSU over Nebraska in 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1996, 1998, and 1999.

LSU, Florida, USC, and Ohio State all had better decades.

You almost succeeded in your goal of secretly pimping Alabama but you couldn’t help yourself with this

LSU and UF had better decades and multiple national titles in this time

Win percentage for LSU is lower (0.762), but more SEC Championships than Texas and more National Titles than both.

Florida slightly better win percentage at 0.769, but same as LSU--more SEC titles than Texas and more national titles than either.

So yeah, I don't see how you could exclude those 2 from the conversation but include Oklahoma and Texas.

In the '90s...

FSU 7-4-1 vs UF
FSU 2-0 vs. Nebraska

The 41-17 arse whipping of Nebraska in the Fiesta Bowl following the 1989 season was technically 1990 too if we want to throw that in there.

There’s a problem with your list….a decade is 10 years no matter what. It doesnt have to start at the beginning of a decade as you’ve done.

90s Nebraska came a few plays away from winning 5 straight national titles. The fact that everyone knew what their offense was doing that decade and couldn’t stop them was quite impressive.

90s Nebraska came a few plays away from winning 5 straight national titles.

They also came within two plays of winning only one.

In the 1995 Orange Bowl, Frank Costa of Miami overthrew a wide open WR in the fourth quarter that would have been an easy TD and sealed the game.

In 1997, Nebraska needed a miracle play with a pass getting kicked up in the air to force OT against lowly Missouri.

Prime Miami, Oklahoma, and FSU damn sure could. Look up Osborne’s record against Switzer and his bowl losing streak.

When Nebraska played defensive fronts with studs like the Selmon bros., Tony Casillas, Brian Bosworth, Cortez Kennedy, Michael Barrow, Jesse Armstead, Derrick Brooks, Ray Lewis, Warren Sapp, Jonathan Vilma, D.J. Williams, etc. they struggled to move the ball.

Those teams also had coaches who were familiar with the Nebraska offense because they played them all the time.

Everyone points to the Florida game in amazement - but who did Florida have on defense? Nothing higher than a 3rd rounder. They also had a HC who cared nothing about defense at the time, much less physical defense. And unlike the teams that beat Nebraska in every bowl game from 1987-1993 (and damn near 1994), Florida had no familiarity with Nebraska’s unique style.

Florida was soft, young, and unprepared.
