Can’t even imagine this being done today - also seems like some UT fan or Irish fan talks smack yo the Ut split end and Johnny Ham Jones Right out of the 70’s

Pretty cool, the great Don Criqui making the introductions. I wonder when the last time this was done for a major game? Definitely adds to the pageantry of cfb.

People were more respectful in those days, you couldn’t do that now or someone would try to start a fight with the players.

The OL for Texas averaged 232 pounds. And all those players looked like they were 35 years old

The Split End for ND, #82 throws “horns down.”

Is he the guy that started it all?

When Criqui was announcing the Texas OL, for some reason I kept thinking of the scene in Revenge of the Nerds when Goodman is announcing the football team at the pep rally at the end of the movie. I wish I could find a clip of it.

Also, some of the players are wearing massive shoulder pads.

Great find on this video.

The Horns were favored that day because of Campbell, but Joe Montana vs. Randy McEachern was a total mismatch. ARse whipping

That was fun to watch. Joe Montana, Earl Campbell. Some big future NFL greats there.

I was most surprised by Alfred Jackson. I was 10 in 1980 and he was one of my favorite Falcons players. Didn’t know he was a Longhorn.

I’ve seen replays of old games where this was done (OSU-Mich and Neb-OU from 70s), but never seen the players have to run through a line of fans lol. That probably would’ve annoyed the hell out of me before a game, but otherwise I agree, it works!

I’m a total College Football 1970’s junkie - my daughter will be competing at the Drive Chip and Pitt in Augusta and the golf
Channel did a feature on her - when they asked her if she wants to be a professional golfer - she said “No - I want to be the next Keith Jackson” - proud dad moment :) should air in February

That being said ABC did a lot of these types of introductions from 72-75 - then they did the weird Naked Gun Ending style - “3 second love shot that should be a still shot” for a few years and at bowl games dabbled with the you it photos - like the O Line at a different spots in New Orleans for the sugar bowl - probably the only enjoyable part of
Me Watching the ‘78 Sugar Bowl beat down by Bama when I was 6 :)

Yes, he did two separate stints as the Notre Dame play-by-play announcer. Criqui also did two separate stints with CBS around his long stint at NBC. He did the Orange Bowl for a long time after Jim Simpson moved from NBC to ESPN. Criqui was awesome.

This is awesome. Couple things that stood out to me as a Saints fan…

Dave Waymer is ND’s flanker (extinct football term sadly), catching passes from Joe Montana. He ended up a CB for the Saints trying to stop Montana.

Russell Erxleben UT kicker. First round bust picked by the Saints. Been in and out of prison since he retired (got cut) from the NFL.

And Earl Campbell only 7 years later a washed up, beaten up RB for the Saints.

I love the live introductions. Even at the abc game of the week I remember them doing a short introduction of the players.
Great times

I checked Joe Montana's wiki and was surprised to learn he was married the whole time he was at Notre Dame. He married his 3rd and current wife in 1985. I always thought he was so perfect it's hard to imagine him going through multiple divorces
