Weird day that was. #5 ND beat #1 Texas and jumped to #1 even though #3 Bama stomped Ohio St (#2 OU lost to Arkansas in the Orange Bowl).

This is awesome. Couple things that stood out to me as a Saints fan…
Dave Waymer is ND’s flanker (extinct football term sadly), catching passes from Joe Montana. He ended up a CB for the Saints trying to stop Montana.
Russell Erxleben UT kicker. First round bust picked by the Saints. Been in and out of prison since he retired (got cut) from the NFL.
And Earl Campbell only 7 years later a washed up, beaten up RB for the Saints.
Alfred Jackson and Big Ben right from Steve Bartkowski stands out to me as a Saints fan.

The Ohio State QB - had developed a pretty bad coke habit which likely led to the 7 fumbles vs Michigan a few weeks prior - and on New Orleans - as the story goes he couldn’t get any coke and was in withdrawal during the Sugar Bowl…

Yeah, I looked up Rod Gerald (I had never heard of him) and see that he really struggled that season and later in life. How a team with a QB who threw 4 TD's to 11 Interceptions made the Sugar Bowl is quite a feat in itself.
Side note, in the Cotton Bowl game, I see the Texas kicker kicking off with the straight-on toe kick knuckleball. Pretty good idea for a kickoff. It creates a certain degree of uncertainty for the receiving team. I think that could definitely work today for an adventurous coach who wants to try to get an occasional change of possession without risking an onside kick.

Man by the time Joe Montana came out it didn’t look like he was gonna make it through there

And no gang symbols
I think Miami ended this

Bring back the big shoulder pads.

Texas was absolutely dominated by ND that game. I remember it being a massive letdown but too young to care that much at the time.
Montana returned to the cotton bowl in an ice storm to lead a comeback against Houston. Couple of years after this game.

Not Don Criqui. He worked for NBC and did the Orange Bowl. That is Lindsey Nelson. He called the Cotton Bowl for CBS

I remember when they used to show the majors the players were taking. Back in the 90's a lot of Badgers were ag journalism as Alvarez was buddies with the ag school dean and could get guys in there that wouldn't pass normal UW admissions.

Did you not watch the player intros?? It was clearly Don Criqui. By the early 80’s they stopped allowing all the people on the field. Go watch that Bama/ND Sugar Bowl, it was a zoo out there.

People were more respectful in those days, you couldn’t do that now or someone would try to start a fight with the players.
IDK bout that. Those ND fans were out of control...players could barely get through em and the idiot in the beard kept jumping up at the camera.
