Is anybody familiar with their story? So, i stumbled upon this interesting story yesterday and was blown away by what's going on at GCU in Phoenix. There really isn't any way to describe it. They are members of the WAC in every sport except no football. Their facilities can compete with most P5 schools. Their student body is fully engaged in supporting their teams. They sell out most events. The campus is literally doubling in size every year and transforming the area. It recently became a nonprofit organization and that has many NCAA member schools crying foul...i think over fear of what this school could become. The campus looks incredible and the future looks even brighter. There are some big time investors invested in this school. Pretty interesting story at GCU.
GCU 2004
GCU 2018
Amazing Facilities:
Its actually pretty amazing whats going on there in such a short amount of time. The master plan for the campus is unreal. They just announced 500 million more in development.

One of the few for profit schools that wasn’t a total scam.

I've known about GCU for a few years, but I never looked into it more in depth. I've seen commercials for online degrees before and I saw a story about their basketball program before, which surprised me because I thought it was some online degree mill... so I was surprised when I saw a story about their basketball program and their facilities.
So what's the full story? How are they growing so much?

Pitino Says GCU is "Tougher place to play than Duke and Kentucky"
Yea Dan Majerle is their coach. Its crazy. Louisville with Rick Pitino played there a couple years ago and after the game, Pitino said it was the loudest environment he has ever played at...including Duke.

I find it pretty fascinating. They aren't always great in baseball, but they always have a ton of draft prospects. They still have an active stock ticker symbol (LOPE). I can't tell how that is separate from the now (as of 7/1/2018) not-for-profit university.
They really invested heavily into their athletics. I think Thunder Dan is their basketball coach.
Here is a recent article on them from Yahoo Finance: LINK
ETA: Andy Stankiewicz is their baseball coach, he's always involved in Team USA coaching at different levels, so apparently he's pretty highly thought of.

all I know is GCU beat out Georgia Tech for a couple of recruits in the last year or two and it was very frustrating LOL
they weren't high profile guys by any means, but we are in the middle of a rebuild and can't afford to lose guys to freakin Grand Canyon U. After reading your post and seeing those pics, it makes a lot more sense now.

Havocs student section
Here is a great video on their student section and the growth. They call themselves the "Havocs". Neat video.

I read a while back that they are finally non-profit again. They were only for-profit for a decade or so because they were on the verge of closing.
I think they had to do some legal wrangling with their finances and operations to get non-profit status accepted.

They are currently up to 20,500 on campus students and at 90,500 online students. That's insane!

Yeah, a girl I know and former LSU soccer player is the women's soccer coach there.

That and there was some talk about NCAA schools protesting them by not playing them in sports. Like i said, i think these schools were afraid of what GCU was about to become...hell they still might become.
