Untold Stories of Football's Air Raid Revolution

quote:

"How come they get to pretend they are soldiers?" Leach said. "The thing is, they aren't actually in the military. I ought to have Mike's Pirate School. The freshmen, all they get is the bandanna. When you're a senior, you get the sword and skull and crossbones. For homework, we'll work pirate maneuvers and stuff like that."

quote:

UK was about to play at LSU in Death Valley, then coached by embattled coach Gerry DiNardo. Mumme marched into the training room on Wednesday with a request that befuddled Allen.

"Hey, during pregame, when I'm talking to DiNardo, I want you to bring me a hot dog," Mumme said.

That Kentucky team changed college football. They weren’t very good, but their coaches, offensive concepts, and scheme spread throughout the college game.

Everyone thought Bob Stoops was crazy when he completely abandoned the wishbone and the run based tradition at Oklahoma to bring in an unknown assistant from Kentucky named Mike Leach to run his offense.

I miss Mike Leach every weekend in football season, and every time he's mentioned outside it.

Swing your swords, gentlemen.

I graduated high school in 94. I grew up in Texas, my junior year my high school coach went to a coaching camp put on by June Jones and Hal Mumme. He came back with a spread offense. I remember our first game when we came out in 4wr set and the defense look like deer in headlights. It was a hell of year watching coaches try and adjust their defenses to our offense. We made a run in the playoffs that year and our Qb threw for 3000 yards. In 1994 that was a huge damn deal in Texas.

Sonny Cumbie was a player under Mike Leech.

As for his coaching, don't ever say that Cumbie came from the Mike Leech coaching tree. That's an insult to Mike.

It’s crazy that all these coaches know each other or are connected in some way… almost like you would never get a job if you not part of that small circle(Black or White)…not saying it’s impossible but you could imagined it being difficult

About as accurate a statement a coach has ever made. I miss those days though.

They look nothing alike, but Larry David ad-libbing that role would be awesome to watch.

After that victory, they dug out the Tiger eye on midfield and buried it on their field.

Exactly the opposite of what’s happening at LSU, coaching up is possible, especially when a team has talent. A team just needs a coaching staff to bring it out of them.
