I dont understand how losing in the preakness would really make a difference. he lost two grade 2 stakes right before the derby. the only thing would be if he gets injured... but whats the chances of a fatal injury?

Don't compare this horse to Secretariat. Secretariat is the GOAT.

Will be the lowest viewed Preakness in tv history, after the Derby was most watched. Wake me up at Saratoga

there have been a few examples... but the chances are very high that there would be no issue. if we use barbaro as the example then no horse should run period.

It amazes how people make such a big deal about the shorter distance of the Preakness. It is one sixteenth of a mile shorter than the Derby. That is 6 to 7 seconds of running. It's not like they are running six furlongs.
If no horses from the Derby enter the Preakness and the field is full of new shooters, it is highly likely that none of them will have been in a race as long as the Preakness. Everyone will be wondering if these horses can handle the distance.
One sixteenth of a mile further is also a much bigger problem for horses with stamina issues than a distance horse running one sixteenth of a mile less.

Does anyone else here always think about Smarty Jones this time of year?

That being said, Golden Tempo was 4 whole seconds off the Derby record. He is nothing special overall but that finish was absolutely amazing.

The cleanest ride often wins these Cavalry charges that have become the unfortunate standard at the Derby (20 horses!) and his ride was spic n' span.

In Secretariat's TC year, 13 horses in the field.

No muddying the trips, the fastest won.

I still get sad when I see a video of the finish at the 2004 Belmont. Apparently he’s living at a farm in Pennsylvania that people from all over the world still visit today to meet him. I thought that was cool and somewhat validating haha

The whip is out on Smart Jones

It’s been 26 years

It’s just one furlong away

One of the greatest calls of all time

Where was tempo 6 seconds before the finish? Distance matters
