Hard to claim that when you lost to a 6-6 Michigan State team on your own home field.

tOSU lost by 4 and was throwing into the end zone at the end. FSU lost to 7-5 team by 17, they just lost earlier in the year. At that time when you lost unfortunately was a big factor. Kansas St or Ohio St should have been in the game vs Tennessee

the pathetic acc didnt even bother with a title game back then and Kstate lost by 3 to aggie in the big 12 title game and lost the 2 ranking while fsu sat at home. along with 93 FSU just paid up some long standing debt this year.

The logic for FSU to jump KSU was based on the fact that FSU beat A&M 23-14 to open the year in the Kickoff Classic and their loss to NCST was considered a fluke b/c Weinke threw all 6 of his picks on the season in that game.

Weinke then got hurt in their last game and couldn't play Tennessee in the Fiesta Bowl.

That entire final weekend WAS the playoffs and wasn't it great and strange and heartbreaking?

UCLA, K-State...

And remember how Tennessee kinda backed into the BCS title?? Nobody talks about the luck they got.

We didn't need this manufactured bullshite we have now with a star chamber. During the process (Saban) of the season up until the final weekend, teams played their way out. Process of elimination, no 2nd or 3rd chances.

ALABAMA has been in a playoff since the Texas loss. We knew it and we responded. ALABAMA also got into the BCS without ever setting foot in the SECCG. But they also knew they were in a playoff every game after the LSU loss.

I don't see any difference whatsoever.

Please tell me how an undefeated SEC champion “backed” their way into a national championship?

A ball bounced off a helmet and landed in Peter Warrick's hands iirc, and also UF forced an FSU fumble in the end zone, UF recovered for a TD but the ball was stripped on the ground and FSU instead only suffered a 2pt safety rather than 7pt TD for UF. This was before instant replay. That victory over UF is what got FSU into the title game.

IIRC Florida couldn't move the ball at all in the second half. Mickey Andrews had a brilliant game plan dropping 8 into coverage.

Fsu dominated and deserved the win.

They were #3, #4? in the polls on the final weekend? Trailed in the SEC title game big time...UCLA shockingly lost. K-State, #1? shockingly lost. There were dominoes that needed to fall before ESPN took over and guaranteed the SEC champ an auto-bid.

No they were not. Tennessee was ranked 1st headed into the final weekend, followed by UCLA at 2 and KState 3rd. And they didn’t trail big time to Mississippi State. MSU returned a punt for a TD with about 10 minutes left in the game that put them ahead by four. Tennessee responded by scoring two touchdowns in 32 seconds to put the game to bed.

Okay...

Why do people remember k-state being ranked #1 Poll? I dunno. Maybe they weren't? And the big hullabaloo about UCLA blowing it?

But you're kinda right. It was

1. K-State
2. Tennessee
3. UCLA

Going into the final weekend of the Coaches Poll, which was 95% of the BCS back then. Still remember UCLA being #2. There was this...where did Tennessee...? They weren't a huge narrative until the last weekend.

Because they were ranked first in the coaches poll. However, they were third in the BCS going into the final weekend. They needed either Tennessee or UCLA to lose to make the Fiesta Bowl.

No the coaches poll made up a third of the BCS formula. The AP poll and computer rankings were the other components. All three were weighted the same.

They weren’t a huge narrative? Maybe because they were ranked first in the BCS by such a large margin that all they needed to do was win and they were in the Fiesta Bowl. So most of the attention was focused on UCLA and Kansas State to see who would finish second. Of course, both lost and FSU snuck into the title game.

They recovered the flukiest fumble in college football history to beat Arkansas.
