Well, the hype/drama created by Drive To Survive paled in comparison to this 2021 season (you said you watched COTA but not much else so not trying to spoil anything for you).

Can't wait for Season 4 to recap it all

This was probably an awful season to get invested in the sport. All downhill from here

Disagree. The new major rule changes this season are going to shake things up somewhere along the grid. Last season was the perfect time to get into F1.

Examples from the recent past:

Honda had been struggling badly and decided to pull out at the end of 2008, virtually giving the team to Ross Brawn. They also gave up on the 2008 season early and reportly got a jump start on designing the 2009 car with the new rules. In 2009 Brawn and Jenson Button dominated early with the controversial double-diffuser. Other teams were outraged and protested, and then it was deemed legal. So the other teams scrambled to update their diffusers. Red Bull caught up to Brawn in speed but by then Brawn had a big lead and Button cruised to the championship. He was driving in defensive mode for the 2nd half of the season, frequently beaten by his teammate Rubens Barrichello, it was kind of pathetic.

The four years before the 2014 rule change was dominated by Sebastian Vettel and Red Bull. But with the new hybrid power unit and new rules, the car had less downforce and much higher low-end torque. It was more difficult to drive than the previous car. Vettel suddenly couldn't even beat his teammate. Daniel Ricciardo placed 3rd in the championship (behind the newly dominant Mercedes) with 238 pts, and Vettel finished 5th with 167 pts.

2022 should be quite interesting to see the changes in the order. And it will be very interesting to see some controversial rules interpretations.

https://www.carmagazine.co.uk/car-news/industry-news/mclaren/bmw-and-audi-in-bidding-war-for-mclaren/

quote:

Following on from news that Audi and Porsche were keen to join F1, our intel now suggests the deal is as good as done. CAR understands that the agreement– waiting to get the thumbs up from the Volkswagen supervisory board – will see Audi and Porsche will enter top-league motor racing in 2026.

The plan is now for Audi to team up with the McLaren motorsport division and also take over Woking’s automotive arm. It´ll be a one all-in parcel, racing and automotive, lock, stock and barrel. CAR understands the diligence phase has not yet begun, but the lawyers of both parties are already talking, and the main stakeholders - among them the Mumtalakat Holding Company from the Middle East - are allegedly willing to sell the loss-making car business.

quote:

For a while, it was not clear whether Audi and Porsche would field two pairs of jointly developed F1 race cars or act merely as powertrain supplier. It now transpires that the latter option is about to materialize. While Audi would power with McLaren, Porsche is said to have an arrangement with Red Bull Racing in the works – potentially after the current period with Honda consultancy. There even exists a fallback Plan B: Audi & Williams and Porsche & Alpha Tauri or even Haas.

About 35 days away from the car reveals... Can't wait

quote:

"The car will be presented mid-February," Ferrari Team Principal Mattia Binotto told media, including RacingNews365.com. "We have not decided yet the date.

"[It will be] from the 16th to the 18th of February. That will be the dates. But [it's] something that we will finalise in the next weeks."

A reminder from a dumb American who watched all the reveals last year...

All these teams format their reveal dates as D/M/Y, not M/D/Y.

Sincerely,
Someone who was standing by for a reveal on the wrong date

Never forget Lando letting the news out early. All to the surprise of the Mclaren staff.

Around 1:00 in he surprises them with a livestream. Around 3 minutes in he spills the beans.

So I'm guessing the FIA has called Lewis' bluff?

Lewis let it out that he's not deciding if he'll drive for 2022 until the FIA release their investigation into the final race of the season. That investigation was supposed to wrap up some time before winter testing at the end of February.

The FIA just moved the release of their investigation conclusion to the very first race weekend of 2022.

So sounds like Lewis/Mercedes will have to make a call before winter testing now.

What is there to investigate? Masi is an idiot. Lewis probably got screwed, but it's not because he's black or the FIA didn't want him to win. You can't go back now. Boom. Investigation done. Pay me a consulting fee.

Hamilton needs to come out and say he doesn't think the right call was made and then say he'll do the rest of the talking on the track, which we know he can do.

It's just dumb fake drama. There's no way Mercedes doesn't know if Hamilton is going to sit out 2022. They would have to get someone else to fill the seat and time is running out. They would probably bring back Bottas. Which means that Alfa Romeo and their sponsors would demand a suitable replacement. It takes time to evaulate the market, work out contracts, negotiate compensation from Mercedes, etc.

On the off-chance that Hamilton is indeed still keeping Mercedes in the dark at this late juncture, then he is being an a-hole of the highest order. Talk about not respecting the organization that brought you so much success.

I'll say if he's real deal moping around considering packing it in to quit, then yea he comes off as a bitch.

If he's using this as motivation and plans to get back in the car and skull drag everyone for 2022 then good on him.

I think he, and Mercedes, feel that 2021 might've been the best shot at title 8 for him, and with the question marks of all the 2022 cars could be concerned they might not have the outright best car to finish out Lewis' career like they have since 2014-2021.

ETA: I fully expect him to be in the car for 2022 and don't buy that he's considering quitting.

Toto has already stated that Lewis is coming back. Though there is no shortage of hot takes coming from every other analyst about his status.

I don't think there was even a source for the "waiting until the FIA report" quote.

People are mad Lewis hasn't said anything publicly.
