That 79 SC team had 4 NFL HOFs on it, that’s pretty incredible

Matthews
Munoz

Those USC teams were stacked. McKay then Robinson had crazy talent. SEC teams were lagging behind, mainly because the had not really started to integrate until the early 70s, whereas USC had a history of integrated teams. McKay convinced Bryant that integration needed to happen.....on the field.

Plus the two of them were good friends.

A Los Angeles Times article on July 17, 2022 by Bill Plaschke describes White's struggles with dementia and how he was living in an Orange County, California assisted living facility as of 2022. White could still recall his football days, but had issues with day-to-day functioning; the signs were that his dementia was caused by his career playing football

That 1979 USC Trojans team was stacked. On top of Heisman Trophy winner Charles White, they also had future Heisman Trophy winner (and Pro Football Hall of Famer) Marcus Allen, as well as future Pro Football Hall of Famers Ronnie Lott, Anthony Munoz, and Bruce Matthews. They probably would have either split the national championship with Alabama again, or won it outright, had they not tied unranked Stanford.

50+ years and counting.

Some years my friends unfurled “wait ‘til next year” signs on opening day…

At some point you just resign yourself to the inevitable.

There is no split in'78, USC beatdown Alabama straight up on Bama's homefield.

They only got the AP vote because the AP had Penn State #1 at the end of the year and Bama was lucky enough to play them in the Sugar Bowl.

If they play anyone else, crickets.

RIP. Sounds he like struggled with substance abuse for years and had CTE in the end. He sold his Heisman in 2008 to clear debts.

USC's 1979 team is probably the most talented not to win a national title

Sounds to me like there was a split then. And it wasn't luck. That game was arranged in the Sugar Bowl by both Bryant and Paterno.
