The Syracuse Mike Williams, not the USC or Clemson Mike Williams.

It was reported he died in a construction accident but he is in fact NOT DEAD but on life support.

Made about $11M over his NFL career.

Retired NFL wide receiver Mike Williams is on life support after suffering what his family described as “massive” head injury at a construction site last week.

Williams’ father Wendell Muhammad provided details about the accident in a GoFundMe post earlier this week, saying Williams, who played for his hometown Buffalo Bills and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, “recently had a major accident at work” in the Tampa Bay, Fla., area when “a steel beam fell on his head causing a massive head injury.”

quote:

The former NFL receiver was rushed to a nearby hospital in Tampa.

“As a result of this accident, there was swelling on his brain and swelling on his spinal cord that was ruptured,” his father said. “These injuries resulted in complete paralysis in his right arm as well as his lower body from the waist down.”

quote:

Lyle told the outlet and she and their daughter Mya had just left the hospital where he was largely unresponsive.

“He was asleep when we went in there and he woke up when he heard our voices and his daughter’s voice,” Lyle said. “And he looked around, and he blinked and he was crying but he can’t move.”

well he quit playing football almost 10 years ago, and he probably only actually cleared about $6-7M, and i'm sure he lived like a millionaire during his 5 year career.

Still not an excuse to not have money now, but i hardly think it's surprising in the least bit.

Man, that's so sad.

Lost my mom to a head injury. Nothing harder in life than seeing them like that.

Between agents and taxes, his $11MM brought in less than $8MM.

Spread that over a few years with an expensive lifestyle (I doubt he expected the money to get shutoff so soon.), it's pretty easy to see how he'd run out of money quickly.

Perhaps he invested it into a construction company, and he was injured on one of his projects? Either way, I doubt he has much of that NFL money, family, friends, stupid purchases all deplete your money almost as fast as you earned it. Sounds like the guy was being responsible and working a job, providing for his family.

For a lot of people, to see that big number, $8,000,000 -- "I could live off that forever!". But they don't realize that during his playing days, he's probably taking his family on expensive vacations in the off season, buying Moms a house. Lil Sis a G-Wagon. Four days in Vegas with his crew. Stuff like that every year will take a big chunk of your savings.

We'd all like to think we wouldn't fall victim to the same traps, but until you're in that situation, how can you be certain? I've had two ex-NFL players as neighbors. They both told the same stories of how demanding and stressful the offseason is because everyone comes at you at the same time. During the season, they could just ignore the demands and focus on a smaller circle. But during the offseason, everyone seemed to know where to find you. Neither of these guys were huge stars -- made about $10-$15 million over their careers. Both had ex-wives that got a huge chunk of their money. And both bought modest, but nice homes and lived normal lives. One of them volunteered as a high school football coach. The other became an insurance agent.

I don't think its anywhere close to $8 mil. Taxes are at least 37% right? Before state taxes? That doesn't include agent fees or anything else? 63% of $11 mil is $6.93 mil before state taxes and agent fees.

The guys that dont put it in the work to get a decent 2nd contract generally go bankrupt. You buy a $1-2 mil house and live off of $500k to $1 mil a year while you are in the league and that money goes away immediately.

Yeah, I don't know the structure of his contract(s) for annual salary, so I estimated on the low end on distributions. State taxes have to be paid for each state he played in during the season. Agent fees for NFL are capped for 3 or 4% I think.

Because 11M earned to the average NFL player might as well be 100k to someone with a brain
