Dude died at 93. How can you get mad at that? Most of us won’t make it 80. It’s a privilege to die at 93.

He was a great man. Met him numerous times at BR kids clinic back in the day. RIP Coach Lasorda

RIP. By many accounts Lasorda was an arse (friend played for the Dodgers and confirms this and my friend never talked shite about anyone) but certainly a character and an MLB icon.

My Tommy Lasorda story (from 2009):

quote:

"Staying at the Embassy Suites in Albuquerque and during breakfast this morning I hear a guy behind me on the phone tearing someone named "Evelyn" a new one about issues with his hotel reservation. He gets off the phone and apologizes to me and I turn around and look and it's Tommy. We talked a little about baseball and he says he's in town to work with the Dodgers' AAA team. I'm wearing hospital scrubs and he asks if I'm a doctor and what I thought about Obama's healthcare speech and then proceeds to give me his thoughts (don't go into politics, Tommy). He have me his card and said if I wanted to catch a Dodger game while in LA to give him a call or drop him an email. I've always thought he was an interesting character and he certainly didn't disappoint."

Sorry to hear that. I attended a banquet at the New Orleans Hilton some years ago where he was the guest speaker. He gave an entertaining and hilarious speech. I have a picture of myself standing between him and Pete Fountain whose jazz club was on the same floor the banquet was on.

When he ran out of the dugout after Gibsons HR, he looked like a kid knowing the Ice Cream man was showing up.... just awesome emotion.....

It felt like he's been 93 for the past 40 years.

Good manager and seemed like a good guy too. RIP.

His best moment was crying after winning the 2000 Olympics with a bunch of college kids.

Mike Piazza isn’t a HOF if Lasorda doesn’t give a recommendation to be drafted as a favor to his family. That’s Godfather shite right there and good on Piazza for repaying the favor. I was a baseball nut as a kid, late 80s on.. sad to see these ole baseball men passing on.

My favorite Tommy Lasorda moment:

I was at a Braves-Dodgers game in Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium back in the Dale Murphy/Bob Horner days. Lasorda made a trip to the mound late in the game, which brought on a chorus of boos. He tipped his hat to the crowd as he returned to the dugout, and was immediately cheered by almost everyone there.

Everyone who loves baseball has a Tommy Lasorda story.

My favorite is from when he was playing in Cuba and the Umpire spoke no English. Tommy complained about balls and strikes all day from the mound, until about the fifth inning, the umpire marches halfway out to the mound, yells
'Laswoooorda!' and showed him a handgun under his jacket.

Tommy said he didn't argue another ball/strike call the rest of the way, and walked another 8 guys.

Yes my coach just wrote him a letter one day and was persistent . It took about a year or so to get the date all planned out and everything set up. Ron Polk spoke as well. Lasorda paid his own way and everything . We raised around 12,000 . This was before internet

I pitched the first game under those lights . Ask around , people will remember . Man he was larger than life to us and a great story teller . I still live in Caledonia

Caledonia just changed their mascot to the Cavaliers .... the other was terrible
