that's what you have to make a month to pay the bills and overhead
You just defined the concept of cost. What i'm asking is what makes up that 70k / month cost.

o you have any idea what the monthly electric bill on a high voltage radio transmitter is ??
Are you saying that the electric bill is a large majority of the 70k per month? Clearly it is not since this gospel solution seems to solve their problems.

WWL has a variety format -- mostly news talk and current affairs -- that is simulcasted on FM ... totally different set up .. plus it is 50,000 watt clear channel station that reaches Iowa at night .. different game ..
Ever listen to it, most of the on-air personalites are terrible. The sports talk is horrendous during football with the exception of Mike Detillier, in the offseason it's like listening to nails on a chalkboard especially when they stray from talking about Saints football.
The news personalities are pretty bad as well, Scoot in the morning, Tommy Tucker

Honestly, the only WWL sports show that I really like is the Friday night show during football season where they give scores of a ton of high school games and have little snippets from "reporters" at many of the game giving updates.
I don't have any particular problem with Bobby Hebert or Deke Beleveda but all Saints all the time gets a little old to me since I'm not that big of a pro football fan.

It's not about big numbers - its about reducing overhead to almost $0 by going to a national canned format and selling some ads as an add-on to the package for the other stations in the cluster. I've been on both sides. Christian stations typically have fewer listers but they r very loyal and selective with their dollars. And how much $ do you think Mike from Plaquemine or some other wacko callers spend at advertisers?
BTW, WSKR was originally a gospel station in Denham Springs. Bruce Hunter started a sports talk show there about 1986-7. May have been the first show in BR. Charles Hanagriff got his start there helping and filling in for Bruce.

I knew it existed and never listened. Mainly because the shows didn't appeal to me. I love LSU, but don't want to hear the same BS all day every day. It was the equivalent of reading the MSB board and getting opinions, but never going to ESPN, or the like, to get any real info on the game being talked about.
Well, me too quite often... we all agree that these guys had weaknesses to work on. And Rag has helped us understand the how the station was starving itself and letting the hosts make the money.
Advertise your program, increase ratings, advertising revenue, and share it with the station so that they make money, and up your game...

labor is a huge cost .. salaries, social security match, insurance, workers comp, unemployment, etc.

What positions existed before the format change that will no longer exist?

The more you say, Rag, the more that I agree with you that these guys had to realize that the mother company wasn't making money with the current line up... and that it was just a matter of time...
All businesses have formal and informal partners... if your partners aren't making money... the game will eventually change.

Moneyg... they explained that the current setup required 1) a full time board operator, and 2), they were renting out air time to Buddy and Jimmy at a relatively low cost.... so the stations profit was minimal
Pipe in gospel.... no board operator...
ETA: sell their own advertising... (as much as they want)

The board operators aren't making 70k per month. Where is the other cost that is going to be eliminated?
Rag seems to know what he's talking about. I'm trying to understand where the 70k number he threw out comes from.

Middle management .. board ops .. dedicated production staff for starters .. automated costs a helluva lot less and you will generate more revenue on top of that ..
Posted on 1/1/12 at 11:06 pm to moneyg
I said 40 to 70 .. 70 being a music station manned round the clock ..

That's all labor. WSKR had a half million / yr payroll to support the local shows? And none of that is needed with the change in format?
That doesn't make sense.

no .. total overhead .. labor .. electricity .. phones .. licensing .. royalties .. shite like that .. $10K a week or so is nothing to burn through .. they didn't pull the plug because it was making money for shits and giggles ..

I hope Ott, Songy, Condon and the rest of the crew say more stuff tomorrow about future plans. You would think they had a backup plan.

Obviously. Your 70k / month number seemed absurd and I was trying to understand it.

Well unfortunately it doesn't seem like any of them except Ott have a platform to do so.
