Setting: A pile of bodies on the field. What goes on in a pile of bodies? That's exactly what this play is about.

You know what a fumble looks like in a pile. There is a large shift and then players start jumping onto the pile at different parts wrestling for the loose ball.

But what if the ball was never loose? What if the running back had control all the way to the ground?

That's where selling a false fumble would come into play. To execute "The Fakeover" there would need to be a veritable setup, so that the ball can be blocked from view. It would help if an RB is being wrapped up by 2 or 3 players and more are closing in - just like how a pile starts.

Then, when the pile starts, The Fakeover goes into effect. One player needs to take the ball out of the runners hands immediately after he was downed, and this should be easy because he's down so he'll let up, then players need to start reacting: Shifting the pile if they are in it, players coming from outside the pile looking for the loose ball, and yelling "fumble!"

If you fake the officials into believing there's a fumble and a player from your team comes up with it, you have successfully executed The Fakeover.

Do you think this could ever work as a trick play? Even if just for once?

How unsportsmanlike is this play?

Inspiration: many many piles, rugby scrums, Saints' on-side kick recovery in the Superbowl.

Did instant replay work on the Saints' Superbowl on-side kick recovery? And I said it'd probably only work once.

onside kick is a lot different than ripping the ball from a downed player

Nothing about this makes sense...and please pass whatever you've been drinkin/smokin to come up with this.

1. You can't pass the ball off after your downed. As some said, replay would confirm he's down. 2. Shifting a pile would also present possible unsportsmanlike penalties b/c players would be jumping in the pile after the play, and there would likely be a whistle so the activity after the whistle would lead to flags. 3. You also subject yourself to turnovers, b/c if you do happen to get away with "faking" the ref into thinking it's a fumble, it's going to suck when the other team comes up with it in the pile.

How about this idea. When in a pile of players on the ground and the other team has a superstar player, you have a designated player that has a needle in their sock (ala sharpie) that gives star player a mild sedative... probably won't feel the pain if he's being distracted by people kicking, grabbing his balls, and being given indian rub burns.

whistles will blow if the refs think it is a fumble, killing the play.

you'd have to tell them its coming.

You aren't getting it. Basically what he means is this:

-Opponent RB runs the ball.
-Defense wraps up RB and gang tackles (preventing refs from seeing the ball)
-Defensive players initiate the fake, diving on the pile screaming "Ball" or "Fumble"
-Defense attempts to take ball away from RB in the pile

The refs don't assume there was a fumble. They have to see the ball loose before they throw their bean bags

yea I definitely didn't get his explanation. How is this any different from every gang tackle that occurs in a football game? Defenders are taught that once someone has the RB wrapped, the rest try to strip the ball.
