See I actually believe QB talent is the highest it’s ever been. Dudes on the field right now can make every throw possible and all the best young QBs coming out are also amazing athletes. However. a few things are contributing to poor QB play
1.) The collective bargaining agreement has incentivized teams to rush QBs and get the most out of them ASAP. This has contributed to development getting hurt.
2.) Defensive talent has never been stronger. Offensive lines simply cannot handle the monsters that are on D-Lines these days. The best big athletes are plying D line and it’s well advanced of offensive line play.
3.) less practice time. Teams have less time to practice vs 20 years ago. So you’re seeing sloppy play.

Less and less people are letting their kids play it. I don’t blame them.

Because they weren’t inferior. SFP has no idea what he’s talking about as usual.

The QBs especially. This year is the worst crop of Quarterback play I can remember ever seeing in my 35+ years of fandom.
Good discussion of it on this podcast this week. It's more the Ds evolving than QBs getting worse.

Athletes, absolutely.
QB though, hell no. They can make every throw yet 80% of their passes are at or around the LOS

Tom Brady sitting on the bench learning at Michigan ain't happening in this NIL portal world.

Sounds like the NFL should get control of its minor league.

Football, in general, or the NFL?
I wouldn't say it's in decline, in general or the NFL. It feels more like a changing of the guard, imo. As fun as the Sosa-maguire HR derby season was, it was due to an influx of subpar pitching that was foreseeable. College and the NFL both have some really good teams, players, and stories but it's gonna be years in the making. This isn't going to be a "OMG THIS YEAR WILL BE CRAZY" situation like who was going to break the HR record first or who would set it by the end of the season.
The MLB isn't going anywhere. Neither is football. It'll even out.

An all-time defense like the 1985 Bears would get shredded by a team like the Chiefs.
Thanks to the rules skewing heavily towards the offense.

I agree.
It's not worth the time to sit down and watch a whole game - takes too long. Not only that, but the actual and real amount of time in a football game in which on-the-field play takes place is about 12 minutes.
If I want to see a game, I record it and watch it later so I can fast forward past the commercials, play stoppages and various other such nonsense.

Coaches can't kick the dumbass out of most players anymorr because they will fear they will transfer out in a whim, so you get undisciplined bone-headed stupidity from almost every team.
Exhibit 1: Georgia players anytime they get behind the wheel of a car.

The defensive schemes are still the same as they were back then in terms of fronts & coverages. The only aspect that is more complex now are the presnap disguises. Showing one look presnap then jumping into something totally different post snap. Stop being an arse.

Decline as in quality or as in profits?
Posted on 10/2/24 at 1:08 pm to magildachunks
i think lack of reps in preseason is contributing
did any starting qb play more than 5 series in preseason?

I think this is the result of simplified college offenses that don’t prepare prospects and not teaching and/or banning tackling on defense
Exactly. Tom Brady nailed it
Then on top of that, everything they’ve changed about the league for the last decade fricking sucks… too many commercials, too many penalties, can’t hit the QB, can’t hit the WRs, the new kickoffs look like they’re from the Canadian Football League for Homosexuals, etc… I could go on and on
Take the saints/falcons game for example. With the way the rules are, the falcons received a touchback, then Kirk Cousins went 1/7 on his last drive, but because of a penalty, they were automatically put in field goal range and they made the kick to win the game. It was such a chicken shite ending…. What the frick have we (they) done to football man? It fricking sucks now

What the frick does this even mean?
Have you sat in practice and watched these guys perform? Or are you just using random cliches to try to prove whatever point you’re trying to make. I’d love to know how you came to the conclusion that every QB can make every throw imaginable

Every facet of the game is watered down and the players don't seem as fundamentally good as they once were.

They can't beat a cover 2 (Tampa 2, whatever you want to call it) because they can't read the defenses.
Flags are ruining the experience of watching, but I'm starting to think it's not the refs fault but the players for not being disciplined and working on sound fundamentals.
Football is not much fun to watch these days. How do they fix it?
They make money on the Mike VIck type quarterbacks so that is the route the teams are choosing to take. Its been going on for years now. I thought at one point it would end but teams keep selecting quarterbacks that are fragile and not traditional pocket passers.
Its ultimately about money, we all know that. Sad that the game is suffereing because of it.
