re: Fighting in hockey is a fricking joke

I don't think it would be a stretch to say hockey players fight more during a game than any other professional team sport. However, I find it funny that when NFL or NBA players fight during the game, which they rarely do, they are called thugs and gangstas, when hockey players fight it's called tradition and part of the game.

No, they get called “goons”, which has nothing but positive connotations! Seriously, I hate when people talk shite about things they clearly know nothing about. No one respects goons.
Also, hockey has incredibly harsh fighting penalties beyond one-on-one fights. The NBA’s “leaving the bench” auto suspension is taken from the NHL rulebook. Also, the NHL goes one step further – if two players are fighting, and a third player comes in to engage… auto suspension for the “third one in”. Hockey is okay with one on one fights, which happen roughly at a rate of one fight every other game, but they have among the harshest penalties for leaving the bench or attacking a defenseless player.
When an NFL player gets in a fight by taking off his own helmet, waiting for the other guy to ready himself, and then engaging just the one player with no interference from any player on either team, and then when one player falls the fight ends… let me know. It’ll be a first. (Not every NHL fight goes down this way, but this is not an uncommon fight).

Just adding my color commentary: being an NHL ref would be pretty fricking awesome.

If no one respect them and one and one fights happen everygame, why is it tolerated in the game at all?

Couple things you need to understand about fighting in the NHL:
-First, 99.9% of fights are fought by guys who are known to fight. They don't just pick any player to fight with unless a dirty play was involved such as late hit on a player/goalie, and in that case it's fair game.
Second, the majority of the fights are fought by white folks (shocking, I know but it's the truth). They're not out there to kill the man their fighting, well besides Bertuzzi. Fights are most of the time mutually agreed upon.
-Third, if you've watched enough fights you 'd know that there's sportsmanship involved after the fight was over whether it's a head nod saying good fight or not throwing the haymaker or cheap shot after the fight is over
There are cases where some fights/brawls go a little extreme, but the NHL has cut that out for the most part, but if does happen it doesn't go unnoticed.

Fighting has to be allowed, or people will eventually realize they're just watching ice skating Canadians and get bored.

The frick they do. The vast majority of games (and I've been watching since we lost the Whalers)do not have fights. As Baloo said, most fights happen in blowouts or when the game is basically over, and they happen to set the tine for the next game. Just like a pitcher that pitches inside.

You should leave this thread. You have no fricking clue what you are talking about, on many levels.

Why? Well, I gave the Borque example, but let’s expand it.
Let’s say you have the best referee who ever existed. He calls everything properly and is always in proper position. Even with Robo-Ref, most of the action happens behind his back. He literally can’t see over half of the action of the game, and a lot of stick fouls happen behind the play. Players can get away with a ton behind even the perfect ref’s back.
So after Ulf commits his tenth stick foul behind the play, the team puts a good on the ice to kick the crap out of him. Now, by the unwritten rules, Ulf has to drop his gloves when challenged. If he doesn’t, he’s publicly shamed. If he does, the goon, let’s call him Tie, beats the living crap out of him. Or, in this extreme example, Ulf refuses to drop his gloves and Tie knocks him out cold anyway. Not that this happened.
Tie got suspended BTW, and rumor had it, the players around the league took up a collection to pay his fine. But Ulf didn’t commit so many stick fouls after that.

And yet Detroit used to be the home of Bob Probert... my how things change. I remember a fight between Probert and Domi where Probert landed over 50 solid shots to Domi's head. ...And Domi was still mouthing off on the way to the box.

Yeah, because seeing Malkin skating at 40-50ish MPH's isn't awesome.

Or if you have a personal vendetta against Steve Ott.

I dont have any respect for the game and that is one reason. The other is, I dont give a damn about it.
