The Fiesta Bowl, the newest of the four B.C.S. bowls, was founded in 1971 and has played host to national championship games. It took in millions in revenues in 2009, most of it earned through ticket sales and corporate sponsorships, according to federal tax records.
quote:
Top executives at the Fiesta Bowl, the host of one of the nation’s pre-eminent college football games, funneled campaign contributions to local politicians, flew other Arizona elected officials around the country at the bowl’s expense, racked up a $1,000 bill at a strip club, and even spent $30,000 on a birthday party for the chief executive, according to an investigative report commissioned by the bowl’s board of directors.
quote:
The most serious revelations involve nearly a dozen employees who told investigators that the chief executive and others working for the bowl encouraged them to make political contributions, then reimbursed them with phony bonus payments. Some said they then were pressured to lie about the practice.
quote:
The investigators do not make conclusions about whether bowl executives or others broke the law, but at least one expert in nonprofit organizations said the findings could lead to criminal charges. At minimum, the investigation is likely to threaten the tax-exempt status of the bowl, which, like most other prominent organizations in college sports, is formally registered as a charity.

I guess JerryWorld and the Cotton Bowl will be hosting a BCS title game within the next 10 years.

I think it's coming up in another 2-3 years, as the title game was in Glendale this year.
That means it will go New Orleans, Miami, and Pasadena before rolling back around to either Glendale or a replacement bowl city.

True, but that's just the bill...not what all they likely spent in cash.

Looks like the BCS is pissed off about this as well. Got this off of twitter.
dennisdoddcbs BCS has just released a statement asking Fiesta "to demonstrate why it should remain a BCS bowl game." Wow.

quote:IMO, the allegations of criminal conduct are the most serious part of this. At a time when higher education is strapped for cash, it is difficult to watch the bowls rake in tons of dough and not share the proceeds with the schools more than they do now. An article I read earlier this year reported that most schools lose money on the deal when they participate in a bowl (something to do with guaranteed seats at game and hotels, etc.). That is a travesty given the TV money the bowls get. Of course, now we know where the money is going. When the Feds get involved to investigate these serious allegations of federal crimes, the whole bowl system could fall like a house of cards.
It could be that only the guys in Phoenix were doing this kind of stuff, but I doubt it.

I've always wondered about this stuff in regards to BCS bowls. Kind of sad to see suspicion confirmed. They didn't hold back either, pretty blatant shite.

In 2008, the Fiesta Bowl paid the $1,200 bill at a Phoenix strip club attended by Junker; Shawn Schoeffler, the former vice president for media relations; and Aaron Brown, a Maricopa County sheriff’s lieutenant who owns a company that provides security to the Fiesta Bowl.
“We are in the business where big, strong athletes are known to attend these types of establishments. It was important for us to visit, and we certainly conducted business.”
Wow. He said that with a straight face.

Looks like the Sugar Bowl is gonna be ok. Given the history of graft and corruption in NO, you'd a thought the Sugar would've been the worst. Good new for the city and the SEC.

Ehh, Sugar isn't looking too clean either..
Fiesta Bowl's got company
Then there's this..
from SI
"Some of them actually are charitable. The Rose Bowl, despite considerable digging from watchdog groups, appears to be exactly what it claims: an active community organization that happens to stage a popular football game. That's probably why Hoolahan makes more in salary than the Rose Bowl's top three executives combined."
Where's that dambass Carville now?

I hate the Rose Bowl for dragging arse when everybody else wants a playoff. The fact that Fiesta officials are being bad doesn't change that fact.
frick the Rose Bowl.
