I liked Ricardo from the Netflix special, Max came off a bit like a punk but he’s been growing on me. LeClerc seems likable and talented. Norris seems like a kid just having a blast and is giving McLaren a little better results than expected and has been fun to watch. Want Haas to be successful since they’re a US team.

I’m actually rewatching Drive to Survive this weekend now that I have a little context since I’ve been keeping up, the fact that Ocon doesn’t have a ride over some of these other guys seems like a shame.

I usually love how rain shakes up a race. However we learned in Austria that the best chance for a good race this year is HOT dry weather. The forecast currently says mild temps and possible thunderstorms around the race start time. Good conditions for Mercedes unfortunately. In dry conditions Hamilton wins this race easily. Can Max compete for the win in variable conditions?

Some of that is on Mercedes though. They chose not to buy him a ride. Williams needed the money and therefore chose Kubica.

Bc these cars don’t handle heat well at all and also bc tire strategy goes to crap. Are they predicting rain tomorrow? I know there is a big heatwave in Europe right now.

I can say that I'm not sure I'm a fan of DRS.

When you watch a couple of seasons where a car 3/10th or more faster can't pass a car in front of it you get the reasoning. I certainly accept the disease but prefer a different cure. Reduce aero grip significantly and give them more mechanical grip. This would mean less disturbance of the airflow behind the car.

As for Ferrari's woes, it is the Italians. Keep in mind after the 83 season Ferrari went 15 years without a championship and were the Keystone Cops of F1, they literally couldn't get out of their own way. Near the end of this run they hired Todt (French) as the team principle and he got Schumacher (Germand) from Benneton and much of the techinal staff including Byrne (South Africa) and Brawn (German) they went on to become the most dominant team of the next decade. Ross Brawn BTW is the man that built Mercedes, he bought Honda team built a car put Mercedes engines in it and won both championships in its first and only year he then sold 75% of it to Mercedes. Since Todt left Ferrari every principle has been Italian and other than a "legacy" constructors in 2008 they haven't won anything.

On reddit they were saying Ferrari should just race the F2004 that Mick was driving around earlier today.

Kubica also brings a ton of experience that should help in car design.

Ocon being the man in waiting at Merc isn't a bad move. Especially considering how Bottas was last season.

Dysfunction is such an Italian trait.

Not at all. They have better drivers but the machine has not been there all year.

That's a fair point but I still blame Mercedes for not ensuring him a ride.

I could certainly be mistaken but I recall the Ferraris, for the most part, doing well in practice and some qualifying only to be let down by the car breaking. Obviously there are some tracks that just favor the Mercedes and Mercedes has won those, but I’m pretty confident in saying the Ferrari is a fast car, just not reliable. I also don’t think the drivers are better. Vettel has made some bone headed decisions lately and while LeClerc shows flashes of genius, he is still very young and inexperienced. I’d take Hamilton Bottas over Vettel LeClerc right now.

Apparently HAM wasn't feeling well this morning and wasn't sure he would take part in qualification. Ocon was on standby to takeover. Mercedes is so dominant right now that even a person sick can win the pole

They've definitely had some mechanical problem, but

just isn't true. Even when they've gotten out front at the start, they've been caught, and they can't catch up with the Mercedes.

In qualifying, they have been consistently outdone by the Mercs.

And only brought home 3 fastest lap 'awards'

Not saying Ferrari is a slow car, but Merc is hitting fast laps while barely trying.

Good car, but well behind

I’m here in Hockenheim and rain went through about 30 min ago. Track is soaked and more rain is coming. Should be good for Max. Puddling water at bottom of turn 1. We are in turn 1, middle of all the orange, and I expect a a mess at the start.

I’m not trying to argue that the Ferrari is better than the Benz obviously the Benz is a superior car, so let me just get that out of the way. That said, I took a look at race FP3, Q3, and race data and found the following:

Out of the 11 races (includes Germany FP3/Q3), Ferrari has:
1. Bahrain - fastest FP3, Q3, and lap
2. China - 2nd fastest lap (fastest was Gasly)
3. Azerbaijan - fastest lap
4. Canada - fastest FP3, Q3
5. France - fastest lap
6. Austria - fastest FP3, Q3
7. Germany - fastest FP3 (also fastest FP1 and FP2)

I realize fastest lap is tricky bc some of those were when Mercedes had the win locked up so Ferrari push pace for an extra point. But I’d say overall, Ferrari has shown to have pace...obviously not every race, but at least half this season. So I don’t think what I said was completely off base. Mercedes is a very fast car but also very reliable, and I think that’s really where they are wiping the floor with Ferrari this season.

I admit it was a bit of hyperbole, but it wasn’t a baseless claim.

A lot of uncertainty with the wets. This may be an exciting race.
