Some details emerge regarding the 2021 formula. All I've seen up to this point have been very general goals like reducing the turbulence that makes it so hard for cars to follow. There are 3 motorsport.com articles that shed a little light on how they hope to do that here, here and here.
Cliffs:
The big change is that downforce will now be generated mostly underneath the car in venturi tunnels.
Wings will still exist but will be greatly simplified. Fewer fiddly aero bits overall. Still some disagreement over the front wing that needs to be ironed out.
Front wheel deflectors will be used to direct wash under the car instead of upward and outward. This again means fewer aero devices on the front wing and bargeboard and therefore less turbulence behind.
Smaller rear wing and no turning vanes.
Taller diffuser.
Broader working range for the tires and no tire warmers. Also 18" tires.
They estimate that a car loses 45% of its downforce when following another car. CFD simulation shows that these changes will reduce that to 5-10%.
There are also a number of measures intended to save costs:
-Reduction of wind tunnel time.
-Some spec parts such as wheel rims, hubs and brake systems.
-Simplified fuel system and radiators.
Other changes being discussed:
-Reduction of driver aids.
-Reduction of telemetry.
-Reduction in weight.
-Reduction in number of personnel at a race weekend.
-Refueling (not in these articles but Crofty & JB were discussing it during the broadcast last weekend)

I think I like most of those changes.
Im unsure about refueling. I like that these races end at a certain time and I feel like they would try to lengthen them if refueling was allowed. I dont have any evidence of this, just a feeling I get.
Sports now are to long. 4-5 hour football games, 4-5 hour baseball games. I actually appreciate soccer for this aspect. Just a halftime and small amount of extra time if needed. Formula 1 races, I can block out pretty much 2 hours to watch a race and then we are done.

I do too. I hope they don't go too far with the spec parts though. I don't want to see F1 turned into IndyCar. [FTR, I really like IndyCar but that's not what I want F1 to become.]

I don't think that's a concern. If they're all about saving money, they won't want to push the engines over longer distances. Although if the races were a little longer, I'd be fine with that. I think I'd miss the 2 second pitstops though if they allowed refueling again.

Everybody's trying to shorten the time sporting events take to play. Why? Whatever I'll be doing after the game will be less interesting than the game or else I'd be doing that instead. And if you have something else to do, you can always pause the game and come back to it later.
I really enjoy endurance racing and have been known to stay up all night watching Le Mans or Daytona. But I don't think F1 will ever become endurance races. That's just not what F1 is.

No need to worry there is a time limit for races if the race is going over 2 hours the leader is shown the checkered flag when he crosses start/finish the first time he crosses after the 2hr mark. There is also a distance limit which is the least number of laps that exceed 305km it is shorter for Monaco (maybe 250km I didn't look).
I love refueling it added another dimension to the chess match. You didn't know if a team was running light or heavy for Qualy and would bring you to the edge of your seat after about 7-8 laps waiting for all the pit stops to start. The only negative is the occasional attempt to BBQ a driver like Verstappen at Hockenheim in I think 1994 and M. Schumacher at the A1 Ring in 2003.

Maybe I misspoke my position on this. Im not really bitching in regards to F1 or soccer. More like football with a freaking commercial after everyplay. A football game is only 1 hour long, yet takes 3,4,5 hours to play.

I just dont think F1 would benefit from a longer race. The only thing that would happen if a race is longer is the first place person will lap everyone including second place.

Not at all. I understood what you were saying. I just don't understand why it's a problem.

Totally agreed. Usually you know the winner 5 laps in unless there is some sort of pitstop drama, mechanical failure or crash.

Seems like that will play right into. Red Bull's hands. These regs are still a long way off.
Wish they would bring back V8s. I get the reason for going to V6s, but it is silly how you justify the move when they put a development cap on the teams.

I say let them go back to spending whatever they want to. It didn't change anything, the big money constructors are still on top. The only "small fish" to do anything in forever was Brawn and that had the genius of Ross.

You could take them out the wind tunnels and actually let them run.
The horror.
The horror.

More news on the tire front. F1 is abandoning the high-deg approach. LINK
Now if they would couple this with refueling and a small gas tank, we might be getting somewhere.

Any good sites to get F1 apparel?

Legit stuff or knockoff items?

Licensed stuff is pretty controlled and all pretty pricey.
You get lucky in the off season usually.
Redbubble does a good job of unique work. Enough so that F1 has been known to copy their work a few times.

For sure, but depending on what you want, Puma typically has some good deals for the top 3 teams.
I got a Ferrari polo and shoes for pretty cheap earlier this year. If you have T-Mobile, their app has Puma coupons for 40% off some weeks.

Clarkson shares his opinion on F1
He's not completely wrong. One of my best friends, who is an F1 fan, also admitted to watching Wimbledon instead of the race last weekend. And I thought there was some fun racing at Silverstone.
I often agree with Hammond when he calls Clarkson a "baboon", but I don't necessarily disagree with the allowance of more danger. It's an integral part of what makes auto racing compelling.

I'm certainly no expert, but saving money doesnt seem to fit anywhere in F1.
