not disagreeing. Because it certainly seems that way. But I looked at all the committee members last night and I failed to see why they, as a unit, would want to do that. How do you guys suppose that conversation goes.

Things equalize towards the end of the season. The CFP committee does themselves no favors by releasing weekly rankings and doing press appearances. It's a no win situation. You can't possibly speak for all 13 committee members.

You don't think it's different how Florida beat Auburn (#11) by 11, but Wisconsin beat two ranked teams (14 & 18) by an average of 21?

Auburn is better, per the committee, than both of those teams.

And you got EMBARRASSED in both of your losses. You lost 7-38 to Ohio State and you LOST TO ILLINOIS. Congrats on beating Iowa and Minnesota, I'm sorry, but that isn't enough to overcome those losses.

Virginia is 9-3 with a 15 point loss to #15 Notre Dame, an 8 point loss to 6-6 Miami, and a 7 point loss to 7-5 Louisville. 0 wins against the current top 25.

Oklahoma State is 8-4 with a 6 point loss to 7-5 Texas, 10 point loss to 4-8 Texas Tech, 18 point loss to #7 Baylor, and 18 point loss to #6 Oklahoma. 0 wins against the current top 25.

By this metric Georgia has the worse loss of any of them and shouldn't be #4. Maybe the committee is trying to prop up LSU?

The committee doesn't need to prop up LSU, they just don't want all the Oklahoma/Utah people butthurt if UGA were to win and then jump them. By putting them at #4, they don't have to worry about dropping anyone if UGA does beat LSU.

Not that they haven't dropped teams before, but it caused butthurt that time too. And it forced Ohio State to mercilessly run it up against the Badgers.

In this extreme, yes, but this isn't the case here
I'd argue the difference between LSU/UGA and Illinois is pretty extreme.

Sure. I don't know where UGA should be ranked, but a bad loss to South Carolina should be PART of the criteria, absolutely. I don't know why you would argue otherwise.

In your opinion.

Maybe Ohio State is just really, really good and Wisconsin had a UGA style loss.

I'll say this: I don't know if the committee has any good reason to prop up Ohio State like they do, but what I do know that the clock hadn't even run out on the LSU win over Alabama and already we were hearing "Is LSU really the #1 team" and "how can Alabama get back in". Then when Ohio State got the bump over LSU, they started in on the complete team talk and how many quality wins they had (even though LSU had the same, if not better, resume). But they won't even touch that with Clemson with their schedule because they have a whole other metric to use on them.

So.......it's how arbitrary it is that frustrates a lot of people. As much as we hated the idea of a computer deciding who was the best team, at least it was a consistent metric and you could look at it and at least get how they got there. With this, who knows that they're going to go with from week to week.

Unless people are worried Clemson is that much better than OU or Utah, it's no real impact
Clemson IS that much better than OU/Utah, that's the reason why it's so important.

I haven't seen a lot in Clemson that would make me think they're a much tougher out than OU or Utah.
Huh? They've had 1 close win over UNC, what have you seen in the other games to not be so impressed? If they were truly better than you think, what would they have done differently in those games?

The AP and coaches poll didn't have this equalization you speak of, the committee did.

Remember when TAMU was a “quality win” for Clemson and bama?

LSU beats them 50-7

Are you insinuating UVA does not have better wins than Cincy? Because they do, you know that. Are we doing some thing where every team played outside the top 25 counts exactly the same?

So is LSU, but the 3 top 12 ish teams they beat don't get that bonus for losing to a really, really good team by less points than that other really, really good team in question.

Have you seen who those other teams are? They had a meh 24-10 win vs an aTm team that got drilled by top level comp, and that's about as good as their wins get.

TAMU

Quality loss leader in the clubhouse.

Seriously, their 5 losses are to the teams ranked #2, #3, #4, #11, and #12.

That's a brutal schedule.

I'll ask the same question again. Let's make a hypothetical and say they are a truly good team, what would those other 11 games look like? They won by an average of 37 points, fwiw.

Clemson does this every year. They gradually improve throughout the year and use it as a bunch of exhibition games before the playoff.

They are hungry, talented, extremely well coached, and experienced in big games. They are going to be a very tough out.
