If they were smart they would offer a streaming only service for a nominal fee to those without a cable provider (or one who doesn't carry it). It blows my mind that companies like them and HBO haven't done this yet.

ESPN3 is how I watched 1/3 of the Bama games last year here in Ohio.

I'm right there with ya bro. It's been how I've watched Hog games and NBA playoff games. I actually liked being able to watch games I couldn't see on TV through the week too.

Way to F up a good thing ya greedy bastages.

Yeah, no way Amazon/Netflix will be able to compete with Circuit City, Sears, Blockbuster, B. Dalton, Sam Goody, Virgin Megastores, or Borders

This screws up my Saturdays so much. I stream games over my PC as well as watch them on TV so I can see multiple games at a time and watch the flows of each game.

Thanks for taking college football back 10 years ESPN.

The Worldwide Leader has elected to end the simulcast of sporting events shown on ESPN's cable nets to ESPN3—a service available to 73 million cable subscribers—and instead restrict those online feeds to viewers whose cable provider subscribes to the WatchESPN service (which reaches about half as many viewers).

Yeah, I noticed that this past weekend...already doesn't work for any sporting event.

It's how I watched all ESPN games last year.

Does anyone know of the games that are on ESPN3 for Thursday? I want to check before the weekend. I think Bama was going to be on ESPN3 for the FAU game. This sucks.

I am going to post this on the SEC Rant. I haven't seen it over there yet.

It's how I planed on watching both the LSU game as well as Michigan Alabama. Thanks a lot ESPN. Way to just screw over everyone and set a growing industry BACK.

I suppose this is intended to make us pressure our cable service to pick up this feature.

ESPN is using this to leverage Directv for sure. Frick espn. I will find a way to keep this service at no additional cost.

terrible analogy.

maybe this is a better analogy:

I pay for internet service. Why should I have to pay a monthly or annual fee for say ESPN Insider or Geaux247 when all i want to read is one article? Is it ok for me to hack into their sites to get that one article since they won't sell it to me seperately? Would it be a viable model for them to sell each article seperately?

Lets say I can buy ESPN a la carte. I don't want to watch poker, or women's basketball. Why can't I just pay for college football? Would it be ok for me to just hack in to only watch what I want since they make me pay for the whole network, since that's reality?

That's not what's going on here if I'm understanding correctly.

The problem is that they are linking ESPN3 simulcasts access to watchESPN, which ESPN isn't offering to everybody.

I would gladly pay for watchESPN, but guess what? My two options for cable/high speed don't offer it. Why does that even flipping matter if I'm willing to pay for it? Just let me subscribe to it.

I'm pretty sure they always meant ESPN3 as an additional "on the go" service to ESPN Cable subscribers.

Not sure whether to promote it or get the word out but it was nice when it was free to anybody.

It makes sense not to allow people to get ESPN without paying for ESPN games just because you have an internet connection.

I hate it but don't begrudge them.

Oh I agree. I'm a cable subscriber with direct tv. I would be all for ESPN3 being restricted to subscribers only.

My beef is, despite the fact that I'm a subscriber, I can't get watchESPN because of the backwards way that ESPN distributes it.

And apparently, that now means I can't watch certain games live on ESPN3, again, despite the fact that I'm a cable subscriber. If I moved 15 miles west I'd be under Comcast's umbrella and I wouldn't even be posting this. It's beyond absurd.

Free? I pay 180 bucks a month for UVerse. ESPN 3 was not free.
