So? Its reality that people sneak into games or concerts. Does that mean they should lower the ticket costs? The point people don't get is its THEIR content. Just because you want it a certain way and have the ability to steal it, doesn't mean they are obligated to cave in. Maybe its not profitable for them to offer it the way you want.

do we apply this standard to other industries?
I don't like buying a different # of hotdogs and hotdog buns, is it then ok for me to steal 2 hot dog buns so i have 10 of each? I only need 2 batteries, not 4, so I will just steal 2 and tell the retail its their fault for not responding to my needs.

Did it ever cross your mind, that maybe they don't make all this content available on demand, when ever and where ever some of you hippsters want, because its not profitable for them?

I doubt that's the case.

The issue with cable networks is that they are too addicted to the teat of the cable business model, which is a dying model. Unfortunately, they are going to milk it until its dry.

ESPN enjoy getting $4-$5 per cable subscriber regardless of whether they watch ESPN or not. It's unfair to non-sports fan, and technological advancement is finally giving those people an alternative (i.e. cord cutting).

The future is on-demand a-la-carte programming. If my desire for that makes me a hipster then so be it.

If ESPN cannot figure out how to make that profitable for them, then they'll fail and someone else will move in to meet the demand. But I doubt that will happen....ESPN will eventually adjust when they have to, and to no one with a brain's surprise, they'll still be profitable.

Do you think free live sports streaming is an inalienable right?

What do you do for a living?

I will never understand why people think the future is either or. There is no way al a carte pograming will be cheaper than the current model. People take the cost of cable divided by the # of chanels and assume each chanel would be about $1/month. No chance. ESPN fee's also subsidize niche program. Just like Networks did for a long time. They pay big money for sports, especially the NFL because to boost viewership of their other programing. Do you really think it would cheaper for people to just pay for each show they want? I mean I love watching 24 on Netwflix, i can bust out a season in a couple of weeks, its costing me pennies if i watch something everyday. Do you think that would be a viable model? I don't know, but i doubt that.

I know some people, like you and Freaux say you'd be willing to pay and some would even be fine with with commercials, but when Netflix wanted to raise prices, all kinds of people flipped out.

You are a hippster if all you want is on demand programing and think most people want only that. This debate reminds me of the late 90's when hipsters were predicting ecommerce would end brick and mortor stores. Most of the stuff I watch is stuff i don't plan to watch. I guarentee you there are more people like me that just surf and rather watch on TV, not an iPad or laptop. Could they and will they offer more stuff a la carte and on demand? Sure There's room in the market place for both models.

probaly, but with out cable, how do you get all this great a la carte programing to your TV? The internet? Great, are you paying a monthly subscription fee for that? That's another thing I don't understand, why people are so up in arms about cable fees, but fork over a similar amount for internet service.

i looked it up. looks like i was wrong they have since added comcast (thats big for most)

here it is

Live streams of all the WatchESPN Networks are available at no additional cost to fans who receive ESPN as part of their TV subscription from Bright House Networks, Comcast, Time Warner Cable, and Verizon FiOS TV.

When did Comcast get added? I checked a couple of months ago and I couldn't use the WatchESPN app. I really hope that it's true that this is still available for Comcast.

Just an example.

but, the important questions that hasn't been answered, is how many people actually watch only online? There will be a disproportional amount on a forum like this, but that does not mean it is enough viewers that makes it cost effective for them to offer it, especially a la carte. Just because a segement of viewers like it and can steal, does not justify that action. hiding behind claims that it is reality, is not a valid justification.

The key part for me is that you have to have a TV subscription. I have Comcast internet, but Directv for TV.

I know a lot of people who have dropped cable all together but stream ESPN3 through their XBOX or computer.

Hell even my parents who are nowhere near tech saavy watch games through ESPN3. I think you're woefully understating it here.

I was actually able to watch the LSU v Northwestern game last year at Buffalo Wild Wings in Ohio

I'm sure it is. And it's only going to get worse as ESPN negotiates with companies with the end of contracts coming up.

Utterly IDIOTIC on their part. I hope people steal the shite out of everything they offer.

Seriously STOP SCREWING YOUR CUSTOMERS with this bullshite. Same thing like HBO, SCREWING us over cause they don't want to accept the future.
